Thought I'd bump this thread up, because this guy's videos are really incredible! There are some videos I'd like to see of storms like Fran or Floyd, but he updates occasionally and might very well get to them.

However, this guy is just one guy who has this kind of footage. Here are some other great videos I have found of older TWC hurricane coverage.

This Danny video is mostly related to the Alabama tornado outbreak the remnants later produced, but towards the end is an UNBELIEVABLE video of action in the storm in Louisiana. You may have never seen this footage before, and even though it's "only" a C1, it's worth the wait!

He's a great collector of TWC hurricanes. I bet the only one since 1995 he doesn't have is Rita, since he was hit by Katrina and didn't get power until Wilma hit. I'm actually amazed he even has footage of Wilma to tell the truth! (BTW did he stay for Katrina? Or was he in a hotel room or somewhere close?)

Here are some storms I've never seen video of before but hope to sometime:

Bob in 1985 (there actually is a video of him on YouTube but no action footage IIRC)
Juan in 1985
Charley in 1986
Florence in 1988
TS Allison and Hurricane Chantal in 1989 (apparently they both caused substantial flooding, and yeah I can dream on this one)

I have once seen footage of Bonnie in 1986 (not 1998) a few years back. I think she was a night storm. IIRC, her video was just kinda boring. Just wind on the sand, choppy seas but no real storm surge, no real damage. Which is a good thing, BTW. She looked like a legit C1, though (but then again, looks count for squat!)

I also once a few years ago saw a video of Floyd in 1987 (not 1999) and I am not at all convinced that he was a hurricane. The video simply showed a sign being blown around, but it was still on its post and I don't think the post ever budged. Plus, if you've never seen his presentation on satellite, he looked pathetic for even a moderate tropical storm!

Think I may have once seen a video a long time of Jerry in 1989. Don't remember what it looked like though.

I actually do sorta remember they only gave a special segment for the hurricanes themselves for about 5 minutes at the top and bottom of the hour (and of course the Tropical Updates). I'm guessing they mainly did that because they thought since they're "The Weather Channel," they should be reporting the weather for the whole country as well. And that they did, even with a big storm looming.

I'm not sure today's hurricane coverage is entirely what people are criticizing TWC for. They're criticizing them for the increased number of commercials over the years and doing many other segments not really related to the weather (such as gardening tips or home improvement).

I am not a critic of TWC's hurricane coverage, just the network when it's a "normal" day. The coverage in the 2004 and 2005 storms in the height of them actually was decent. I can understand why a local forecast wouldn't be shown for that, but I still do like to see them! I guess something I could recommend for TWC to do is maybe the next time a big storm hits, have occasional tickers at the bottom of the screen for local forecasts. Kinda like news tickers for headlines at the bottom of TV screens on CNN. And TWC already has tickers for severe weather warnings; why not local forecasts during a big hurricane?

Still, these classics are really great views, and I would love to find more.

I know, not to mention I also wish they had kept some of those opening intros. I especially liked the ones from 1995 for Erin and Opal, with the swaying palm trees and the word "hurricane" swirling toward the top. WAY cool. Although Bob's was also good with just the satellite loop (even though I wasn't really following hurricanes yet).

Now...the intros are just too bland for my liking. Too "newsy" if you know what I mean by that.

Derek is correct when he says that TWC's coverage is much better than years ago, but, what I don't like is the quality of the graphics - when they show a forecast map in a window, on the bias, it makes the map very difficult if not useless to view...

Ten years ago, they'd have a map full of current temps, now, they use giant fonts to show 5 or 6 current or forecast temps - they've watered down the graphics so much, that, often most of them are useless...

About the only "OCM" that I give an credibility to today is Dr. Forbes, who in some ways is similar to the late John Hope - the rest are only reading script...

Those early years were great with John Hope doing the Tropical Updates.Every hour at :50 past the hour,I sat down in front of the TV set to see the master of the tropics do those updates.But right now,there are new OCMS that are more like TV showbuisness than weather mets.The only 2 persons that I like to hear that are left from those early years of TWC is Jim Cantore followed by the replacement for Hope,DR Lyons.

Yes, it's now like many of my favorite cable channels from 10 or 15 years ago (TV Land, Food Network, VH-1, OLN, TWC, even CNN) that have been diminished by reality programs, etc., into a mush of worthless viewing...

TWC might have been a bit limited with their live coverage 15 or so years ago, but, I'd be glad to get that back, over some of the "weathertainment" OCM's that TWC has hired in recent years...

Just last night, with "up to 900 channels at my fingertips" (at least that's what the local cable company says), it got to the point that I just turned the set off for an almost lack of anything worthwhile - so much for the information age...

Wow! Talk about memories! I worked for the school system in Tampa back then and we had the day off - not for effects of Andrew but in case of people needing shelter. I watched TWC for two days straight!

Oh yes, I remember. I was just a week fresh out of high school. I couldn't help but think it was coming, but still sad.

Not to be cold or anything, but I'm just not sure that John Hope would be able to handle the 2004 and 2005 seasons that well. Everyone was fatigued, especially Max Mayfield. I just wonder how an 80-something would be able to cope with that much stress.

That said, I still also wish we could have had his analysis especially when Charley, Ivan, and Katrina struck. He was one of a kind.
