I seem to recall one tropical storm a few years ago that had an almost very distinct eye on satellite, but the feature only lasted very briefly. There was debate over whether or not it was a hurricane, but the judgment was that the "eye" was too transient to warrant an upgrade.

Like I said, Erin could possibly have been tropical, but only for a very brief period of time. Calling it a "low" was probably the correct move.

It definitely was not a hurricane (or a hurricane-strength anything) since no sustained wind data came anywhere near 65 kt.

Yeah of course it wasn't a hurricane (though I did hear it contained winds of hurricane force in gusts at least?) but it did look like one, esp in that radar. Of course in small deep lows here in the UK sometimes they look like they have eyes on radar, though none have looked as good as that did!

I'd love to see a sat.picture of it whilst it had its eye, it'd be interesting to see?

Well, I think if I remember correctly, the winds during that time were sustained 50 to 60 mph. The gusts were up to 75ish in spots, but that is in gusts.

Holy crap, so that's setteled. I guess I can accept it as a "low" for now. I would have liked to see it as a tropical storm, but whatever works.

I hope this system gets researched more in the future.

I'd also like to see a few other systems (ALLISON) reclassified then. These inconsistencies in HURDAT are cause for scientific concern, since that is used for research purposes

I thought Allison was a remnant low when it came back and rained all over us in Houston.

Yes, the key word is "subjective:"

While it is a subjective determination, in this case the deep convection is judged to have lasted an insufficient period of time to classify the system as a tropical cyclone.

Allison was a tropical depression when it impacted Houston the secondtime.

I was a subtropical storm over central Mississippi

From what I remember on June 8-9, Allison was just a low pressure because there was a lot of thunder and lightning in that flooding event. I know TS Claudette in 1979 had heavy rain, but no thunder and lightning.

I agree with Derek, it was a tropical storm. But the nhc won't upgrade a system overland, maybe because the nhc job is not to upgrade systems over land. Which kind of makes sense if that is the case.

Derek, you meant it, I hope. Or were you really a subtropical storm over Mississippi? :P

A Large Mesoscale Convective Vortex IMO.
It is the remnant of a tropical system. Though it could be
argued that it may have been quasitropical.

Well Derek, you might have been a subtropical storm, but you've got nothing on me. I was a C5 near Miami in 1992.

I have to agree with you guys, that typo WAS funny. I wasn't going to say it but you guys made me unable to resist.

Ya know though, other than Allison (not Derek  ), what were some other recent storms that also somehow developed features like that over land? This type of storm that's been debated like this is actually really fascinating! At least, I've only seen that these two times.

Tropical Depression Gaston in 2004 suddenly reached tropical storm strength again over land, but it could have never really lost it in the first place.
