Dark Week in US History (April 16-20)

#1 Postby HURAKAN » Wed Apr 16, 2008 4:24 pm

April 16:

2007 - Virginia Tech massacre: the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history. The gunman shoots 32 people to death and injures 23 others before committing suicide.

April 19:

1993 - The 51-day siege of the Branch Davidian building outside Waco, Texas, USA, ends when a fire breaks out. Eighty-one people die.

1995 - Oklahoma City bombing: The Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA, is bombed, killing 168. That same day convicted murderer Richard Wayne Snell, who had ties to bombing suspect Timothy McVeigh, was executed in Arkansas.

April 20:

1999 - Columbine High School massacre: Two gunmen kill 13 people and injure 24 others before committing suicide at Columbine High School located in Jefferson County, Colorado.

_______________

So many unnecessary deaths and so much grieve for the families. God Bless them.

Lot of bad things happened between April 14-20. Today is the Virginia Tech Massacre anniversary. Felt like yesterday. The Oklahoma City Bombing happened because of the Branch Davidian Fire. Wayne Snell was executed that day when the bomb went off. Timothy McVeigh did have contact with him. As for Columbine, it was likely related to what happened in Waco and Oklahoma City.

The date for Columbine was chosen because April 20 (4/20) is a significant date to some young people. Google it. :D

I know what 420 is all about on April 20th. It is when they smoke marijuana. Known about it since high school.

I don't think the Columbine killers were into drugs as far as I know.

I should have said most speculation is that that was the reason they chose it, not that it's a proven fact.

By 1999, the term was really at its peak popularity. I knew a lot of younger people who loved to use the term even if they weren't into drugs. There's also speculation that Hitler's birthday had something to do with it since they admired him, but there isn't really any tradition of honoring him with acts of violence on his birthday and it's likely that if it were their sole motivation for picking the date, they'd have made that known.

Anyway, lot's of weird things happen on April 20th simply because of the date itself. Almost all of those are because of its use in the drug subculture. For many young people, even those not involved in drugs, it's a very significant date. I guarantee you a good 4 out of 5 people between the ages of 16 and 25 made note of today being 4/20.
