Aral Sea Dust Storm

#1 Postby senorpepr » Fri May 02, 2008 2:24 pm

I meant to make a post a few days ago about this, but on the 29th of April, a large duststorm advected southwestward from the Aral Sea (or what remains of it).

With the sea continuing to dissipate (thanks to poor irrigation), the loose, salty, silt left behind easily transports with a little wind. With a tight pressure gradiant producing an east-northeasterly wind at 20-30KT, this was the result:

Wow thats an amazing image there, I've seen some videos of these dust storms and they are some amazing but also probably quite dangerous if the vis gets very low I'd guess?

We actually had one here yesterday in Las Vegas. The outflow from a decaying thunderstorm cell pushed a wall of dust. The visibility was so low that traffic on the I-15 freeway stopped for a few minutes.

Great image. For what I have seen in pictures and TV, dust storms must be horrible to experience. They not only limit your visibility, but make it hard to breath.

Awesome pic! :) I haven't experience any sandstorms ever since. I wonder how would it be like to experience something like...
