City wants to split Florida into 2 states

#1 Postby HURAKAN » Wed May 07, 2008 6:20 am

City Commission wants Florida divided into two states

Furious at what they call no respect from state leaders when it comes to collecting and spending their own money, the North Lauderdale City Commission passed a resolution requesting that Florida be divided into two states: North Florida and South Florida with the boundary line from Palm Beach County down through Monroe County.

The North Lauderdale Commission has sent out 306 resolutions asking other municipalities and counties to join in the effort.

On Wednesday night, the city of Margate takes up the same issue.

The April 29th North Lauderdale resolution states that "the City Commission... has no confidence in the State Legislature's ability to recognize the practical impact of its decisions or how its decisions demonstrably affect municipalities that directly provide essential public services to the citizens and residents of the State; and the City Commission deems a division of the State to be in the best interests of the citizens and residents of the State."

North Lauderdale Commissioner Rich Moyle said Tuesday he knows darned well it won't happen. But he said it's the principle and "to stir something up."

"It's based out of frustration with the state Legislature ignoring the cities in South Florida," he said. "They don't really care too much what happens with South Florida with the cities and being able to survive. It's just a statement I believe, doing something this huge, it would take a long time."

The city of Margate's resolution states that "local governments representing the citizens within the counties of Miami Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach earnestly feel that the government of the State of Florida has, as in the past, but more so today, ignored the requirements of the citizens which comprise the three most populous counties of southeast Florida both for funding from the of the State government of Florida and for laws and regulations which are needed to secure the quality of life, benefits of liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

It also calls for "its citizens to sever the ties that said citizens have with the State of Florida and formulate and establish their own state of the Federal Union of the United States."

Said Margate Commissioner Art Bross: "We're sick and tired of it, of Tallahassee sending down unfunded mandates without sending the money and on top of it, then telling us we can't collect the money from our residents. I'm irritated. I really feel this way. I understand their problems up there with the bad times we're having now, I can understand, but we've had recessions before and if you use your head you come out of it."

North and South Florida are two completely different places. If you have never lived in Florida, then you should know that North Florida is more country while South Florida is more cosmopolitan and we generate most of the money that is used by the state. I think that if we can create a state and keep the money we generate for us, we would have less monetary problems. Of course, the Florida legislature won't allow this to pass, ever!!!

Yep. Florida is the only state in the country where the further north you go the more southern you get, while the further south you go the more northern you get.

I would support this if they moved the line up far enough to include Orlando and Tampa in South Florida.

The proposal is only for Dade, Broward Palm Beach, and Monroe Counties

I say go for it. There are numerous differences between the two areas. For one, the language is different. Second, we are urban they largely are not.

Of course, by doing that you'd be handing the Democrats several presidential electoral votes. :D ;)

If they name the part with Pensacola and Daytona 'Redneck Florida' and the part with Miami as 'South New York', I'd be all for it.

Of course, if you split up Texas five or six ways, and were careful to dilute Austin, Houston and Dallas, you could add 4 or 8 Republicans to the Senate.

But I don't think that'll happen.

There are quite a few areas that would make sense to split. IMO, NYC should be its own state. You could split California into north and south. And now this.

Here is what I would propose for the new names:

North Florida would become Flori and the south part we'd just call DUH.

Really a stupid idea IMO

I saw this the other day, but decided not to post it to avoid the politics. From a weather standpoint, nFL and sFL are entirely different many times of the year anyways.

Sounds like California . . . there are those who have been talking about breaking it up into 2 (or 3 if you are from the eastern and central portions of the state) for years . . .

Here is the reason the colony of "Carolina" was split in North Carolina and South Carolina in 1712. . .

Then you have the West Virginia/Virginia break up in 1860-something . . . so it wouldn't be unprecedented for a state to breakup over economic and political issues. .

that depends upon where exactly we make the split

If the split were ever just Dade and Monroe, the Dems wont be getting anything. That is an issue that would likely be considered

South New York will NEVER happen. This is a Cuban area, not an NYC transplant region.

If this becomes a new state, lets give it some type of Cuban name

Interestingly enough, NYC and Long Island have some people attempting to secede from the State of New York together.

If you split the state into three (Lower Alabama, Florida, and South Florida) that would be electorally fair. You'd have a GOP stronghold, a Dem stronghold, and a swing state. :)

I don't believe the motivation of the split is political, therefore, this thread shouldn't be political. I think the idea is not bad at all. It should go to vote but the Florida legislature wouldn't allow that to happen.

I like the idea but the possibilities of it becoming a reality is low at best.

The name should be New Cuba or New Havana. j/k

In seriousness, Florida does have more cultural diversity than any other state. Key West is a completely different world from Pensacola. I doubt there is another state with two so vastly different cultural regions.
