It would be number 10, but only three of those happened in the last century.

No. The Bhola Cyclone in 1970 killed up to 500,000. 100,000 would put it number 8 on the list.

I have read that up to 1.1 million could of died in the Bhola Cyclone of 1970. That would include disease outbreaks.

Considering the populations in these river deltas continue to increase in the BoB, I doubt it is.

It's hard to say what a direct hit by Katrina would have done. The Main river levee there is fairly strong.

Myanmar hasn't had a census since the british in 1937. It would not shock me if the toll went even higher. Half of Myanmar's 46 million population lives in the fertile Delta.

This didn't look as deadly as it was on satellite.

150 sustained is what the max sustaiend winds likely were at landfall.

Remember, one CANNOT use the ADT when the eye was as small as this one. The ADT has a known low bias for small eyes. If we only had the ADT, Wilma and Felix would have been borderline cat 3/4s like this one

This is only the beginning. Throwing bodies in the river isn't going to help matters. Sanitation, no water and little food. I hate to say this but the government maybe thinning the population on purpose. Its the only reason I can think of to stall all the countries who are willing to help with donations.

Do they use the Australian measure of using gusts as the windspeed?

If a 6-digit death toll becomes confirmed, then that may be the only one we will see in our lifetimes for a TC.

Considering the populations in these river deltas continue to increase in the BoB, I doubt it is.

It depends if they get better warning for future ones and can protect the population from high death tolls.

This has to be the deadliest tropical cyclone for this century.

Definitely so far, and you can say this millennium so far too.

Sadly not all that surpising given we were warned that the death toll could reach upto 250,000, certainly is tragic story however.

For many of us, this is the deadliest cyclone in our lives.

There can't be that many people under 17 on here.

EDIT: There are probably quite a few actually.

The Hunger Site is set up to get help to where it is needed (thehungersite.com).
This is a partial bit of an email I got from the customer supervisor of Greater Good Network Stores in response to a question about how they go about actually getting goods to the people in need.

"The "Bednets for Burma" is a program we created last year. The bednets are provided by Global Health Access Program in Burma.

Regarding the current situation with aid to people affected by the recent cyclone, we're working on providing funding to Mercy Corps, the folks at the Global Health Access Program and also Dr. Cynthia's Mae Tao clinic situated across the border in Thailand. These organizations have been working to assist the people of Burma for quite some time. They know how to get aid to those who need it."

I know we are all leery of giving aid where unstable and unscrupulous govt's are in charge, but this group is as close as I can find to trust, already at work in this part of the world, if anyone is interested in checking it out.
