On a side note, there is a movement in ND to change the state's name to "Dakota", because they think the word "North" in the name makes it sound more remote than it really is. :)

Everyone knows Texas is a really big state, and most people know Alaska is even bigger, in fact, more than double the size of Texas.

But have you ever looked at a map and realized just how big Montana is?

Having been between NYC and BOS on I-95, I think they have so many tollbooths in Connecticut just to give people the impression the state is bigger than it is, because it takes so long to drive through.

If West Virginia stayed loyal to the Union and didn't secede, why does it get the modifier. It should be Virginia, and the state with Richmond in it should be East Virginia or South Virginia.

Why do we have two Dakotas?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dakota_Territory

Dakota Territory was divided into the states of North Dakota and South Dakota on November 2, 1889. The admission of two states, as opposed to one, was done for a number of reasons. The two centers of population in the territory were in the northeast and southeast corners of the territory, several hundred miles away from each other. On a national level, there was pressure from the Republican Party to admit the two states rather than one to add political power in the Senate.

In the case of Florida, and I believe it could also be the case for states like California, Texas, New York, and more, is that their population has grown to such an extreme and from such diverse cultures, than sometimes you step back and think how are your interests being represented when you have other people in the state with other interests. I know and believe that in a democratic system you have to look for what is better for the majority but what is happening here in Florida is that because the interests of North Florida are completely different to those in South Florida, and because the state's legislature is in North Florida, the southern portion of the state feels that they are being misrepresented and their money not being properly used. This is the issue concerning the split of North and South Florida.

By the way, I think I herd Jay Leno last night making a remark to this issue saying that if two Floridas would be able to count faster!
