Unbelievable. My dad has a cousin who lives in Neosho. I can't fathom the damage in Picher, OK. My dad was raised in and around the Miami, OK area. He still has family down in that area.

At least 96 dead. Already the deadliest year since 1998, and if it passes about 140, it becomes the deadliest since 1974.

Derecho well underway, widespread warnings of 80 mph+ winds. The straight-line winds could themselves be destructive overnight.

There's been quite a bit of wind damage across the southern half of the Memphis metro.

The BBC reports that large areas of Picher have been destroyed.

Tornadoes and severe storms have swept across the central part of the United States, causing destruction and killing at least 18 people.

A tornado severely damaged the north-eastern Oklahoma town of Picher before hitting the Missouri town of Seneca 15 miles (24km) away.

At least six people died in Picher and a total of 12 in Missouri.

An emergencies official in Picher said a 24-street area of the town had been "virtually destroyed".

Michelann Ooten warned that the death toll could climb as rescuers sifted through the rubble looking for survivors.

Television images showed overturned cars, homes ripped from their foundations and trees stripped of their leaves.

Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry has ordered National Guard troops to arrive in Picher by Sunday morning to help in rescue and recovery operations, Ms Ooten added.

At least three of the people killed in Missouri died in Seneca.

"The last two years we've had floods and tornadoes - it's just one right after another," said Susie Stonner of the State Emergency Management Agency.

Mr Henry, who plans to visit the area later on Sunday, said a major emergency response was under way.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Picher and all of the other Oklahoma communities that have been impacted by the latest wave of severe weather," he said.

I count the same as you, but in different locations. I have 1 in Barry County and the 10 in Newton County.

I can't tell if it is 10 or 13 in Newton County. I think the 10 is a revised number of the 3 earlier reported because Racine is located between Seneca and Neosho.

Crazy night here. Some of the most wicked lightning I've ever seen. It was ridiculous and nearly nonstop for almost 2 hours. :double: Finally starting to end here.

Possible tornado just SW of Atlanta right now.

There was a lot of damage up north of Birmingham especially in Winston and Cullman Counties. Might have been a fairly long-track tornado.

UK teams appear to have got a tornado or two last night, the one I watched were on a torando that came through Stuttgart, it developed nearly over the top of them from what I've heard with very close lightning strikes, they estimate EF2/3 type damage in Stuttgart and the place is a real mess with regards to lots of emeregency services and media.

Most of the damage reports from Alabama are tree and powerline, but some of the damage from Georgia may be tornadic. I think surveys over the next few days will find more tornado tracks in Arkansas and Mississippi and Georgia, and maybe Alabama.

In a weird way, the disaster of the abandoned lead mines near Picher may have saved some lives last night

The filmmakers provided updates in October 2007 on the status of Picher and the people in the film.

In June 2006, after studies found most churches, homes and the school were in serious danger of caving in, a federal buyout was offered to any Picher residents who wanted to leave. A majority of the residents accepted the offer and have left or are in the process of leaving. After a February 2007 local election, it was decided that the school would stay open for another year, although enrollment is down. The senior class enrollment is at eight students, down from 26 last year. And some of those students will be leaving during this school year. Many people are taking the buyout not because they are anxious to get out, but because they realize this will be the fairest price they will ever be able to get.

Of the characters in the film, Hoppy Ray is most likely to stay, although it's anticipated city utilities will no longer be available within a couple years' time. Bill Lake and his family chose to move after a long fight to stay. However, they will still live very near the Superfund site. Betty Cole and her family have all moved or are in the process of moving.

Additionally, the Quapaw Tribe and other local advocacy groups are still actively working with the federal and state governments to remediate their lands. This is where the real tragedy lies—a tribe that has already been once removed from its ancestral homelands is left with an immense amount of waste on the land they were relocated to. Much of the efforts to date were aimed at mitigating the threat to human health, especially the children. Now after the relocation of the Picher/Cardin communities, the Quapaw Tribe, the state and the nation will be left to address a monumental waste site that has been continually expanding through the motion of the wind, rivers and aquifers.

I think 10 is the best estimate there based on damage reports. The total death toll seems to be 21:

Picher OK - 7
Newton County MO - 10
Purdy MO - 1
Dublin GA - 1
Jasper County MO - 1 (straight line winds)
unknown - 1
