Re: Florida Weather Thread-Weak Cold Front
Interesting info from Key West NWS regarding lack of rainfall, could break a record going back to 1893.
THE LAST MEASURABLE RAINFALL AT THE KEY WEST INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
OCCURRED ON APRIL 8...AND 37 DAYS WITHOUT MEASURABLE RAINFALL HAVE
BEEN OBSERVED SINCE. IF NO MEASURABLE RAINFALL OCCURS THROUGH
SATURDAY...39 DAYS WILL HAVE PASSED WITH NO MEASURABLE RAINFALL...
AND THIS STRETCH WOULD TIE FOR SIXTH PLACE ON THE ALL TIME LIST. THE
LONGEST STREAK OF SUCH DAYS IN THE KEY WEST CLIMATE RECORD IS 52
DAYS...WHICH ENDED ON APRIL 17 1893.

Re: Florida Weather Thread-Weak Cold Front
This has been an utter nightmare here along the southeast coast. Continuous west-southwest surface winds have allowed the smoke from the Miami-Dade and Lake Okeechobee fires to sift eastward toward the east coast. Soil conditions in natural areas are "tinderbox" dry in my area, and several hammock species are wilting in a manner vaguely similar to 1998, though this year has definitely not matched the nasty conditions (max temp records/wildfires) of that year. I'm sure that I can remember worse years, but I can't recall this amount of wilting among understory shrubs in several recent dry Mays, including 2004. Regardless, this month seems superficially worse than previous Mays with below average precip; the smoke definitely has contributed to it, but the real reason is the constant low-level capping at 850 mb. The inversions have also prevented convection, despite low level convergence provided by the afternoon SE sea breeze. Today, I glanced west and I could only spot the same west to east movement of low level cumulus with absolutely no signs of convection. This month has been monotonous, but the fact that it continues into the closing weeks of this month leaves me aghast. The situation continues to grow worse with every passing day that features no precip along southeast Florida. The rainy season commenced toward the end of May 1998, but there have been no signs of diurnal convection as we enter the last weeks of this May. I will take any precip, which I still believe is likely before the month ends, but MIA/WPB will likely still finish with a dry May and precip below climatological May means.
By the way, MIA broke another daily record today; 94 F beat the previous record of 93 F in 1985.

Here's some really nice footage of the storms we had the past few days up here in the Panhandle.

Are you inland? If so, I don't doubt it.
South Florida weather is really not very nice right now. This kind of weather reminds me a lot of the high desert.
