Re: Countdown to 2008 Atlantic Hurricane Season=11 Days
I agree--it's a very slim chance to have a major at the very beginning. But considering that development in the western Pacific/Indian Ocean often gives insight into what the western Atlantic might do a few weeks later, that part of the world already has had a record early storm, and it's first three storms were all major hurricanes including Nargis. Gives us something to think about. Makes me want to nightly scan the Atlantic for an invest.
That will change to every three hours in a couple weeks.

Well Able was an impressive storm and its clear it probably rode the gulf stream and thats where it got its energy from. Such strong systems are rare in May (indeed we've only seen 4 hurricanes ever in May) and also not all that common in June either though the odds for such systems increase rapidly as time goes along.

KWT wrote:Yep it would be crazy, esp because of the systems track was fairly close to the Carolinas when it was at its strongest though there weren't much damage. Able is the only pre-season major...indeed there has only ever been 4 hurricanes in the month of May in history so chances for such a development in any one year are pretty slim.
What basis did they call it a major hurricane on? I'm skeptical about its Cat 3 status...that might have been flight level winds. I think it was a high Cat 1 or low Cat 2.

T minus 10 days and counting............as the 2008 Texas Hurricane Conference is taking place May 20-22 on Galveston Island. We hope to be as prepared as well as possible, with hopes for a very quiet season.

Re: Countdown to 2008 Atlantic Hurricane Season=7 Days
Title is incorrect. It's 7 days to next Saturday morning at 7am CDT, not Sunday morning.
