I have a question about recon

#1 Postby Guest » Tue Jul 08, 2003 8:09 am

I am following the recon flight on the PCBeach sight - I have a question - how do you know if they found a west wind. What do I need to look for on the chart - I noticed winds are up to 46 as the plane is flying.

Appreciate any comments.

Right now, there aren't any obs...which means they are trying to fix a vortex or will fix one so the NHC can issue. That is usually what is occuring when you go 2 hours without an ob.

To see the west winds...look at the OB.

The winds are 09040 (easterly at 40 kts). The pressure is 1010MB (/0010). To get west winds...you want to see 09040 (which is 090 degrees at 40 kts) change to 22020...or any westerly direction. So look at the first 3 numbers there and that is the wind direction.

270º would be a due W wind.

So, 247º to 292º is from WSW through WNW.
