MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1270
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0857 PM CDT SAT JUN 07 2008
AREAS AFFECTED...LOWER MI...LAKE MI
CONCERNING...TORNADO WATCH 481...
VALID 080157Z - 080300Z
THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR TORNADO WATCH 481 CONTINUES.
LOW LEVEL WARM ADVECTION APPEARS TO BE INCREASING ACROSS LOWER MI AS
LLJ BEGINS TO INCREASE IN EXCESS OF 50KT INTO BACK SIDE OF EVOLVING
MCS FROM SRN LAKE MI INTO NRN PORTIONS OF TORNADO WATCH 481 OVER
LOWER MI. 00Z SOUNDING FROM DTX WAS NOT PARTICULARLY UNSTABLE THIS
EVENING...BUT DID DISPLAY MORE THAN SUFFICIENT SHEAR FOR THE
MAINTENANCE OF EVOLVING MCS. MUCH HIGHER BUOYANCY IS FEEDING INTO
THE WRN PORTIONS OF THUNDERSTORM COMPLEX OVER LAKE MI WHICH WILL AID
ADDITIONAL UPDRAFTS ACROSS THIS REGION. ADDITIONALLY...A FEW
DISCRETE SUPERCELLS WILL MERGE WITH SEWD-SAGGING MCS NEAR THE LAKE
SHORE OVER ALLEGAN/VAN BUREN COUNTY. THIS APPEARS TO BE THE HIGHEST
PROBABILITY AREA FOR TORNADOES IN THE SHORT TERM.
OTHERWISE...DAMAGING WINDS MAY BECOME THE PRIMARY SEVERE THREAT.

MyfoxChigago reports:
"On nearby Interstate 57, multiple semi trucks and cars were overturned in the outbound lanes near Stuenkel Road, including a semi truck that blocked all lanes of traffic, said Illinois State Police Trooper Mark Dorencz."

Hmm, well the sources I've read don't mention many injuries, actually none according to CBS out of Chicago.. I would assume there were some though.
I think the tornado lifted several times because storm reports kept indicating that. CBS Chicago says "homes damaged, trees destroyed." So probably EF2.

Just to highlight this... I've said it before and I'll keep saying it... this is a classic reason why weather radios are IMPORTANT over relying solely on sirens.
There was no way the sirens would have woke me up, and I doubt it would have woke up many people in the Omaha area. The wx radio saved my hide this time.

Exactly. As soon as the NWS transmits the warning, the radio produces a loud tone
Only a tone ? They could broadcast infos about the relevant counties or cities.

It depends on the radio. Some radios, you can listen to the voice warning manually... mine automatically goes to the voice warnings after the tone has sounded.
Additionally, there is a SAME capability. You can set the radios to go off for specific counties or for specific criteria. For instance, my radio will only sound during tornado watches and warnings and severe thunderstorm watches and warnings for my county and the county just to my north.

I thought so - transmitting a exact warning isn´t that problem any more but a signal to set the folks under alert is a good step. But why are counties in the north of yours are relevant. S / SW counties would make more sense...
But the county-setting is an interesting thing for sure.

I choose the county north of me because I live close to the border. If a system is moving E or just slightly south of E, I could be affected. The counties S and W of me are far away from me.
