Re: The Random Facts thread
i like this topic! ive got a few random facts about horses:-
If a statue in the park of a person on a horse has both front legs in the air, the person died in battle; if the horse has one front leg in the air, the person died as a result of wounds received in battle; if the horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died of natural causes.
Never seen a horse puke? That's because they can't. Horses have no gag reflex and are incapable of throwing up. Sometimes their inability to throw up causes stomach upsets - which can be fatal.
Horses have a common birthday of January 1st, regardless of when they are actually born. This means that technically a horse born on Christmas Day celebrates it’s first birthday a week later on New Years day.
Horses consume more energy when they lay down than when they are standing up.
Horses can see everything around them except directly in front of them or directly behind them. You can usually tell which direction they are looking at by the direction of their ears.
Horses do not like to be looked at directly in the eye.
There really is no way to save a horse that has broken both legs. Horses are rarely able to survive after breaking one leg, due to the fact that they absolutely must distribute their weight evenly on all four legs (I can't remember exactly what happens, but I know that it causes immense damage to the other three legs, making the situation even worse and more painful for the horse, oftentimes causing death). There are certain braces and structures that can help rehabilitate a horse that has broken a leg, but these only work if the horse doesn't struggle too much and cooperates (struggling simply makes the break worse, and healing impossible). Even with the technology we have now, there is no way to guarantee that a horse can recover after breaking ONE leg. So breaking two...a horse simply does not stand a chance.

That's not true. At least not in England.
As for random facts:
More people have orbited the moon (22) than have thrown a perfect game in Major League Baseball (17).

another one:
The Atlantic Ocean covers 22% of the Earth's surface.
The greatest depth is 28,232 feet ( 8,605 meters) and that is located in the Puerto Rico Trench.
That spot is about 135 km north (85 miles) of Puerto Rico and is known as the Milwaukee Deep.

Some twister facts some people may not know. From memory. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Waterspouts can form much easier then tornadoes. While a tornado needs very specific conditions to develop, a water spout can develop under a relatively small cumulonimbus cloud. (I know this, I saw a waterspout this weekend!!!)
A tornado with winds of over 300mph, even if it is measured on sight, will be rated an EF-0 if it causes no damage. the EF scale is based on damage alone.
Waterspouts are not counted in official tornado outbreaks, unless they make landfall.
Because they are so rare, there are only about 6 reported photographs of snowspouts, a tornado that forms during a snowstorm.
About 1% of all tornadoes spin backwards.
About 48% of all tornadoes have no visible condensation funnel, and are visible as only a debris cloud.
What you see of a tornado is generally only the bottom 1/10 of the actual circulation.
Officially, the largest tornado in history was 2.5 miles across, and occured on May 22, 2004 in Hallam, Nebraska. However, in May of 1999 in Mulhall, Oklahoma, radar indicated a tornado with an actual windfield of over 4 miles across, but had a much smaller damage path.
The small town of Codell, Kansas, was hit by a tornado on the exact same date three years straight. A tornado hit on May 20, 1916, 1917, and 1918.
