Even really powerful STS don't have eyes. Here's a pic of the 79 Subtropical Storm. It's max intensity (in this photo) was Category 1.

It's cool that Bertha put the "old" annular eyewall right over Bermuda. STS or not I'm sure it notched up the effect a little. Plus Bertha has developed a healthy curled band.

TROPICAL STORM BERTHA TROPICAL CYCLONE UPDATE
NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL AL022008
255 PM AST MON JUL 14 2008
THE GOVERNMENT OF BERMUDA HAS ISSUED A HURRICANE WATCH FOR THE
ISLAND OF BERMUDA. A HURRICANE WATCH MEANS THAT HURRICANE
CONDITIONS ARE POSSIBLE WITHIN THE WATCH AREA.

DATA FROM AN AIR FORCE RESERVE UNIT RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT INDICATE
THAT BERTHA IS JUST BELOW HURRICANE STRENGTH...WITH MAXIMUM
SUSTAINED WINDS OF 70 MPH. THESE WINDS ARE LOCATED TO THE
SOUTHWEST OF THE CENTER IN A RAINBAND THAT WILL BE PASSING OVER
BERMUDA DURING THE NEXT FEW HOURS. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT BERTHA WILL
REACH HURRICANE STRENGTH BEFORE CLEARING BERMUDA...AND FOR THIS
REASON THE GOVERNMENT OF BERMUDA HAS ISSUED A HURRICANE WATCH FOR
THE ISLAND. A TROPICAL STORM WARNING ALSO REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR
BERMUDA.

Interesting - the flight level winds actually support calling it Hurricane Bertha but the SFMR does not.

For the last 36 hours Bertha has had little to No convection near its center, with some convection around the system, But a LLC.

The invest also looked the same right now.

Strong convection is nicely wrapping around the center. Could easily be a hurricane tomorrow.

Yep it looks far better then it did yesterday thats for sure, deep convection very nearly wrapped around the center again, shows what a bit of movement can do, finally in warmer waters again.

Yep its hard to believe that Bertha may be close to being a hurricane once again, very long lasting system isn't it!

:uarrow: I agree, in fact, this is probably the first time in a long time I've seen Bertha with a nice ring of deep convection around the center.

I wouldnt be surprised to see this as a hurricane again tonight. The sattelite presentation has really improved today.

Im guessing we may be dealing with Bertha for a few more days yet.

This thing is coming together fast, 360 degree eye now. Also there is a nice swirl moving eastward inside of it. Bermuda could not of gotten in a worst "line up" with this system. Not only is it the thickest part of the eye wall but it is strengthing while the southern part of the cyclone is strengthing.

If the cyclone was 30 miles west the winds would be in the 20 mph range because of the large eye. I would bet that it is a hurricane right now.

Yesterday it looked like Bermuda was going to get the weakest. Rapid turn of events.

Yep that does look like a hurricane once again, convection has finally managed to work its way around the center again!
