I would have to say that is no longer a hollow centre, but it is an eye.

I'm normally very conservative when it comes to TCs, organisation and strength, but I have to say I would be surprised if the NHC did not upgrade it at 5, especially if this current organisation trend continues.

ah, the good ol' baroclinic influence. It happens every time... they have a secondary (or tertiary) peak around this time.

I hope Bertha does make it to Sunday before extra-tropical transition, and does make the top 10 longest lived Atlantic storms list.

:uarrow: Wow is right Chacor... I don't know as much as you guys about meteorology but that sure looks like a hurricane and not a 45K tropical storm.

I'd go with 60 kts now, and if convection builds in the southern semicircle it should be a hurricane at the next advisory.

Code: Select all

CIMSS TROPICAL CYCLONE INTENSITY CONSENSUS FOR BERTHA

CURRENT ESTIMATE
Date (yyyymmddhh): 2008071808
SATCON (3mem): MSLP = 982 hPa    MSW = 69 kt
ADT: 1001 hPa    37 kt    Scene: CRVBD
CIMSS AMSU: 979 hPa    70 kt    Bias Corr: 0 (TPC)
CIRA AMSU: 978 hPa    76 kt    Tmax: 3.3

Most intensity estimates from CIMSS have it at least at hurricane strength. I also think this is a hurricane based on how it looks at this point.

Edit: Whoops, didn't see time stamp, this is from 8:00z -_-

As I was thinking they increased the intensity to 60 kts. An upgrade seems likely if new convection forms in the southern semicircle.
