Okay Orlando S2Kers. I need your help.

#1 Postby Jagno » Fri Jul 18, 2008 12:37 am

I'm reeling with excitement as my youngest son (17) just got accepted to MMI there in Orlando. Six months ago he was severely injured on a Harley and they told me he wouldn't walk but this was the ultimate goal of his to attend this school and he's doing it, and walking too. We are making plans to go to Orlando in a couple of weeks to tour the college. He still has another surgery and his senior year of high school to complete so he won't actually begin classes until June 29, 2009. Any words of advice? I'll be going nuts next season worrying about Florida hurricanes on top of my own Louisiana canes. We will be putting our RV in a park near the college for him to live in, which will be much less expensive than Orlando's apartment costs. He'll be driving his Harley or Nissan while there. Does Orlando require you to change your license if you are a student although he'll be there for 2 years? We've never been there so any and all information is appreciated. Thank you!

I'm not in Orlando but here is a link to the Florida DMV that might answer your license question.

Glad to hear your son is doing well! Congrats on the acceptance too!

Technically, if he gets a job here, he has two weeks to change his license. But, I have co-workers that waited months to do that. I am not sure what he needs to do if he is just a full time student.

I wouldn't think that if you're a student you'd need to change your residence. You're there temporarily. As for employment most students don't work full time so that may not warrant changing your residence. If it were my kid i wouldn't worry about it and just let him keep his louisiana license.

Check how much it costs to register a car in both states and go with the cheaper state. I have a Corolla, and it costs about $40 a year.
