Name brands, store brands
Just curious, do you buy name brand products or store name brands? In these difficult economic times, we all are looking for ways to cut corners on the household budget, I know we are, we will buy store brands when applicable, one thing I will NOT skimp on, is my ketchup "LOL!" I've tried store brands YUCK
I only buy Heinz Ketchup, period! A lot of store brands are BETTER than name brands.

Another item we don't skimp on is laundry detergent, use to buy the *cheaper* brands, it very seldom gets the clothes clean, being in the type of business we own, we get VERY dirty, especially doing our enviro impact studies in the Rodeo Chediski Burn area, we come home sometimes as black as coal!
I agree with the store brand ice cream, "YUCK!" The ONLY time we even consider store brand is if it's Sherbert.

You know what REALLY gets my goat, is when you find something you really like, be it name brand or store.....they discontinue the item, of course I understand, with over 680 NEW ITEMS introduced into the market place every year, they have remove the slower selling items to make room. I know when I was a meat mgr, I had to reset my lunch meat counter at least once every 2 weeks, a new hot dog, a new lunch meat was introduced and space had to be made!

It depends.....I agree with Dennis....the only ketchup I buy is Heinz; but Kroger mustard is okay; and I purchase Bama and Flavorite mayo as often as Blue Plate and Miracle Whip. I've always preferred name brand soft drinks. I've tried Sam's Choice and Big K (Kroger), but they just aren't the same as Coke and Pepsi to me.
I'm far more likely to purchase store/ generic brands of items I don't eat (detergent, dishwashing liquid); however, the only soap I ever buy is Ivory...since I was a kid (hey, it even floats!
Have a great day!

Interesting topic. I don't care for store brand soda as well. It definitely tastes differently. Also... I have to have my Ozarka Bottled Water... not Always Save or Best Choice, etc. When it comes to things like potato chips, cereal, and cookies it seems that the store brands are just as good.
Detergent, soap, and shampoo are ALWAYS name brands for me.

Nice topic ! I have to say I've bought store brand condensed soups and Blech !!! I stick to Cambells. I agree on the shampoo, laundry detergent, ice cream(fav is Homemade brand, yummy !). You def. save money on the cereal, chips, cookies etc if they're store brand and they're just as good. Ya gotta kinda pick and choose, try a store brand once, to see if it's worth it or not. Just thought of another one,I don't like canned store brand vegies.Nothing like little chunks of husk in w/ your sweet corn.... gross.

Well, we the people of the Burgh want to thank all of you Heinz buyers. Yep it is the best and made right here!!!!
My daughter works for Kroger and buys many of their store brand products but not all.
I think we all have certain Name brands that cannot be substituted such as Heinz or Coke or Campbell's Soup. Now when it comes to canned green beans, personally, they all taste the same to me. When it comes to pineapple, I must buy Dole!!!
Right now I think I'll head on home for some Beringer Chenin Blanc. No generic brand for that!
See ya

I can get by on generics, except for very specific things...
Maull's Barbecue Sauce (only made in St. Louis), Kikkoman Soy Sauce, Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce, Hellman's Mayonaisse, and Heinz 57 Ketchup.
And I don't skimp on what goes on my feet (that is, WHEN I get to buy shoes/boots
)...Danner, Hi-Tec, Wolverine, Bates, or Florsheim, please!

Living here in Cincinnati, I read a local article once that stated P & G also produced generic diapers, not just Pampers. So I thought I'd give them a try. And never went back to name brand diapers, saving a bundle each week!
That got me thinking, why not try other generic products. So I did. I'd say I use generic or Kroger brand items, over 50% of the time. It might even be more like 75% sometimes. One example, Krogers sells a laundry detergent, very similar to Wisk, forget the name right now, but a large bottle of liquid detergent is only $2.99! And even 2 for $5 some weeks. You just can't beat that! If I think of it I'll go check out the name for anyone interested. Just checked - it's called Tempo. When I see shoppers picking up Wisk, I want to say - do you know Krogers is the only store carrying this detergent, it's quite good, and cheap?!!! Read an article somewhere that only Krogers sells it.
So yeah, I look for bargains!

I will buy store brand canned veggies, spagettios, peanut butter, tater tots, or popcorn. Store brand ice cream, chips, soda, and laundry detergent just dont do it for me.
I am hopelessly hooked on Dawn dish soap. I could have even done a commercial yesterday. I washed 10 plates, 5 bowls, 6 or 7 pie plates and 2 pots and a skillet all with the same sinkload. I was impressed! Why ten plates you ask? Because I am the only person in my home who will wash a plate immediately after using it. Everyone else just throws them in the sink. (My pet peeve)
