Lull Thread

#1 Postby jaxfladude » Sun Jul 27, 2008 9:23 pm

So now that Invest 97L is again gone from the Storm2K tropical map, how long will this lull last?
Me: rest of the season, hell forever would be good...

I would be curious as to the meteorological impact of not having any further tropical cyclones.

They do serve a purpose, which is to move heat from the equator and tropics (oceanic heat?) out to the temperate and polar regions and upper atmosphere.

Hmmm, I wonder what a world without hurricanes would be like.....

I know about the heat transfer, I was just kidding about a a everlasting "lull" and the the result it would have on Storm2K MB's Talkin' Tropics.....

I believe the great majority of the Atlantic basin is currently in a negative MJO phase. Once that goes possitive again, things will flare up. That usually cycles every 2 weeks or so. I'm sure somebody has the latest and greatest map posted somewhere around here.

That is the Bastardi explanation, and it should therefore start getting active again around August 10th.

Per certain pro-mets, the MJO is not a significant factor East of the Gulf and Caribbean, but I'm not sure Bastardi agrees.

The African wave hasn't completely poofed yet, and there is a blob to watch, showing no signs of development, that will move inland today and water the sugar cane growing along Highway 90.

But it looks like a slow week.

I don't know about everyone else but I'm welcoming this break. It's been a busy month in the Atlantic and even worldwide.

Not sure what Bastardi says, as I don't frequent his site, but I have noticed that the MJO does seem to have something to it regarding the frequency of lower pressures and therefore increased precipitation around when it is in its positive form in the western hemisphere. Not that it is the tell all of what is potential out there, but there just seems to be an increased likelihood of activity when it is around because of the added moisture and instability generally around.

When it comes back around again, we will probably see some very obvious long-trackers occurring, which we would expect to see climatologically starting now anyway, but also some pretty naked waves start looking more beefy when they do get over here since they can start spinning up a bit more convection when the MJO is here at the same time.

I've wondered for some time whether or not that's just a myth, or a bit of "science" which hasn't been verified.

As a vertical system, tropical cyclones move heat upward, not poleward. They may eventually drag some warm air along for a ride to higher latitudes, but can that compare to all of the warm air sucked aloft? Warm air that would, in the absence of the storm, otherwise have moved laterally to some appreciative northern state?

I think the week after a storm makes landfall is the worst time. You've just spent hours watching the movement, activity and interesting discussions and then it's all over!

Not to mention... it's even worse if there are no invests out there. The tropical atlantic is really dead at the moment. Now if it's dead for three more weeks then it's no big deal, because eventually all the excitement wears off.

Then something will pop up out there and we'll have more people on these boards then the storm before!
