Hudson's Bay ice-out date statistics?

#1 Postby Honeyko » Sat Jul 19, 2008 7:33 am

With the sun overdue for the upswing from the bottom ebb of the sunspot cycle, it's looking like a bloody cold next winter in North America, given that, with only a week 'til August, a fourth of Hudson's Bay is still ice-covered. (Last year, it was iced-out before July, as it is most years.) This morning, the Duluth met office made note of this while lamenting that the jet stream was still meandering south of the area due to Bay ice-bolstered polar highs continuing to subject that city to raw northeasterly winds off Lake Superior well into late summer. (This persistent lower storm track is responsible for the Iowa and Nebraska flooding we've all heard about; there's been a very sharp cut-off to the northern extent of precipitation this year around the Minneapolis area.)

Does anyone know where I could find a year-by-year record of the latest ice-out date statistics for Hudson's Bay?

Interesting post Honeyko. I can see where this could have a big impact on our winter.

What do we all believe is the reason?
1. Thicker than average ice or
2. Cooler spring/summer conditions

Honeyko, maybe you can try here. I didn't look around on the site, but I'm sure such information is recorded....somewhere.

While the ice no longer appears in the graphic, two patches are still obvious on VIS loops on August 7.
