I know the recon thread with the raw messages are hard to read when you are not used to them: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=102265&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=280

They are SE of the system by about 60 miles or so and are headed there. So far nothing too interesting. Probably not interesting til they are within 20-30 miles.

TTheriot1975 wrote:OK...what is recon saying...flight winds? Are they in the center yet?

Bolivar Peninsula is the barrier island like feature Northeast of Galveston Island. I guess it isn't an island, or they wouldn't call it a Peninsula. I think it joins the mainland near Winnie.

I like...you can see the lower clouds better than most of the other images I know of. Almost like a 3.9 micron image.

Ed looks like he really started hauling quickly to the west in the last hour or so.
People between Lafayette and Lake Charles, you look to be getting quite a bit of action?

In that case that's what I'm talking about when I say NE tip of Galveston island. Obviously I don't know much about the area haha so what I'm thinking then is a landfall right on the Bolivar Peninsula.

Well like LaBreeze just said... local met showed the radar and it looks like the center of the storm per the local doppler radar is close to 30 miles from the coast of Louisiana. Unless his center is incorrect, this storm may be making landfall sooner than later.

One of the oil platforms showed sustained winds of 42 knots with gusts of 54 knots at an elevation of 23 meters.

IIRC, High Island isn't an island, but a slight rise in elevation caused by a salt dome. I have a geologist friend that believes 'The Heights' in Houston is the last Gulf Coast salt dome unexplored for oil and natural gas.

Platform near Marsh Island, LA, not quite standard elevation, but at 23 meters lower than most oil platform anemometers, sustained TS winds.

Bad evening to be fishing off that platform...

Thanks hurakan. So I'm making a totally bold and unofficial prediction that landfall will be between Caplen (sp) and Gilchrist.

They show him headed toward the TX/La border per their forecast points
based on his "current" track.

Lowest pressure so far is 1000.7 mb but they aren't anywhere near the center.
