Re: ATL: Tropical Storm Edouard - Gulf of Mexico
Given the 'real' track, the center does seem to be moving more due W now:
http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?product=N0Z&rid=lch&loop=yes
Of course, that could all change in oh, about 10 minutes.

Bed time.
About into long range view of HGX radar. Unofficial guess- between High Island and Sabine River, before lunch.
Back around 6:15 during morning coffee. Boss says no reason a minimal hurricane should keep us home. Traffic should be way lighter than usual, and funny feeling, weather for commute won't be that terrible.

For anyone that wants to know some local conditions in SW Houston:
Still far hotter than it should be (I'd say about 85 right now)
Absolutely zero wind at ground level
Moisture has just started streaming in at the midlevels and the clouds show some, but not pronounced banding.
Air is heavy (I'm thinking DPs of about 72 right now)
Of course the device taking these measurements is highly prone to making errors in judgement.

Well this confirms what I've been seeing.
Houston is a no go. Note the reference to upper TX or LA.
landfall.
...Rain bands with tropical storm force winds spreading over the
coast of Louisiana...
a Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect from Grand Isle westward
to Port O'Connor Texas.
A Hurricane Watch remains in effect from west of Intracoastal City
Louisiana to Port O'Connor.
For storm information specific to your area...including possible
inland watches and warnings...please monitor products issued
by your local weather office.
At 100 am CDT...0600z...the center of Tropical Storm Edouard was
located near latitude 29.0 north...longitude 92.8 west or about 90
miles...145 km...southeast of Port Arthur Texas and about 120
miles...190 km...east of Galveston Texas.
Edouard is moving toward the west-northwest near 10 mph...17
km/hr...and this general motion is expected to continue with some
increase in forward speed during the next day or two. On the
forecast track...the center of Edouard is expected to be near or
over the Upper Texas or southwestern Louisiana coasts by midday
today.
Maximum sustained winds are near 60 mph...95 km/hr...with higher
gusts. Edouard is forecast to strengthen...and it is expected to
be near hurricane strength by the time it reaches the coastline
later today.
Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 70 miles...110 km
from the center. Some elevated oil rigs south of the Louisiana
coast have been reporting winds gusts of near hurricane force during
the past few hours.

ummm... my Texas History and Geography is kind of rusty, but I could've sworn that Houston/Galveston are part of the Upper Texas coast....

Stormcenter, for goodness sakes, the NHC has been discussing "the upper Texas coast / SW Louisiana" for days and days.
Notice that the watch and warning areas haven't changed. At all.

It's sorta at the northeastern edge of Galveston Bay, if that makes any sense.
High Island's located right where the Bolivar Peninsula joins the mainland. If you think of the Bolivar as an "L" shape tilted on it's side so it looks like __i , the dot of the little I is High Island.

The radar is all over the place tonight. Every time I feel I get a handle on the storm, something changes. The latest few frames seem to show a northwest jog, but it may just be an illusion. Who knows. Hopefully after I wake up from a few hours of sleep I am about to get, we will have a better handle on the situation.

Re:
fasterdisaster wrote:I don't see how that proves anything. Last time I checked High Island would qualify as upper TX coast.
I wasn't trying to prove anything only stating that I have been calling
for a TX/LA. border landfall.

it is. Houston is still likely going to be on the southern edge of the eyewall, but since we're cutting such fine corners, it could also be on the northern edge too, so it's kind of a meaningless statement at this point. The main thing is that it's intensifying and is still heading in the same general direction, with a slight movement recently to the right that may have already reverted back to the west. So we shall see.

Finally have a band developing on the east side of the center making it much easier to pinpoint:

I know that but many on this board didn't see that way. Nothing personal
was intended.

That's a good trick. It will definitely be helpful when trying to determine direction more precisely.Bailey1777 wrote:Turn everything off on the radar shot and then watch movement it is west or just north of west.

Re: ATL: Tropical Storm Edouard - Gulf of Mexico
Chief Meteorolgist Greg Bostwick for KFDM in Beaumont just had a live update on the storm and said that we are probably going to have a minimal Cat 1 making landfall between High Island and Sabine Pass. He also said strong winds will start affecting the area between 6 and 9 a.m. So looks like landfall may be further to the east than earlier forecast.
