JMO: Leave the boycott threats out of this thread. I think this thread should be just for the Olympics, their events, and the traveling of the torch ie the trip to the top of Everest.

Stern rules for foreigners at Olympics

BEIJING: Foreigners attending the Beijing Olympics better behave — or else.

The Beijing Olympic organizing committee issued a stern, nine-page document Monday that covers 57 topics. Written in Chinese only and posted on the official Web site, the guide covers everything from a ban on sleeping outdoors to the need for government permission to stage a protest.

Visitors also should know this:

_Those with "mental diseases" or contagious conditions will be barred.

_Some parts of the country are closed to visitors — one of them Tibet.

"Mental diseases"? Discrimination? Another reason the IOC shouldn't have given the games to Beijing.

The opening ceremony will air on NBC on August 8 at 8pm ET.

However, there are two events that get started before hand. The womens soccer tournament starts on August 6 and the mens on August 7. All other events get started after the 8th.

A storm has caused the suspension of training for British athletes and disrupted preparation for the Olympic equestrian events in Hong Kong.

Tropical storm Kammuri brought heavy rain and strong winds to Macau, where Team GB's holding camp is based.

British heptathlete Kelly Sotherton said the squad was told to stay inside.

Meanwhile, the arrival of two planes carrying 24 show jumping horses from China, America and the United Arab Emirates was delayed.

All are expected to arrive in Hong Kong, ready for the competition which starts on Saturday, as soon as the weather clears.

"It will weaken gradually by Saturday," Leung Wing-mo, a senior scientific officer with the Hong Kong observatory said. "If anything, a trough of low pressure will just bring showers."

Sotherton, a bronze medallist in Athens four years ago, said the conditions were frustrating for the athletes.

"We can't leave the hotel because when there's a typhoon at this Level 8 all the transport is cancelled, so unfortunately we are all holed up in a hotel," she said.

Good thing it took so long to get organized across the South China Sea.

This was posted on the CNN Olympics Blog. It was very interesting to me.

Unexpected attractions
Posted: 1216 GMT

Sometimes you go to view great landmarks like Tiannamen Square and the Forbidden City and wind up as the attraction. That’s what happened to our crew on Wednesday as we ventured away from our base in the Olympic Green area to tape an upcoming segment.

Many Chinese have never seen a foreigner and a few dozen asked if they could be photographed with us.

When I asked one - through our translator - “why take a picture with us, when Mao’s freshly re-painted image is positioned just across the street?”, he replied “because you are new to us, you are fresh!”

Another said he had never seen a man with brown skin in person and thought I was one of the Olympic athletes. Yeah, I wish!

It was a reminder of how isolated this vast nation is from the rest of the world. The hundreds of security and military personnel - who seem to be positioned every 15 meters - shift their eyes to get a better look at us as we walk by, all the while remaining otherwise motionless.

Other Chinese nationals seem to watch our movements and the way we interact with each other. We’ve come to the Far East to witness athletic history and to chronicle the most political Olympics in more than two decades, but never could we have predicted becoming a target of the curious.
