Fast National ratings for Monday, Aug. 11, 2008

NBC's coverage of the Summer Olympics brought more big ratings to NBC Monday, completely dominating the other networks.

The Olympics brought NBC a 17.6 rating/28 share in primetime. CBS was the best of the rest with a 4.1/7. ABC managed only a 1.9/3, but that was good enough to beat FOX (1.7/3) for third. The CW pulled in a 0.7/1.

The story was similar in the adults 18-49 demographic, with NBC's 10.2 rating lapping the field several times. CBS took second with a 1.9. ABC, 1.0, was third, followed by FOX, 0.9, and The CW, 0.4.

The Beijing Olympics scored a 15.9/26 for NBC at 8 p.m. Reruns of "The Big Bang Theory" and "How I Met Your Mother" averaged 3.3/5 for CBS. "High School Musical: Get in the Picture" drew a 1.9/3 for ABC, edging a "Prison Break" rerun on FOX. A "Gossip Girl" repeat on The CW earned a 0.8/1.

NBC's Olympic coverage improved to 17.0/26 at 9 p.m. CBS held onto second with "Two and a Half Men," 5.4/8, and "Old Christine," 3.9/6. FOX's "Sarah Connor Chronicles" rerun and ABC's "Samantha Who?" tied for third in households at 1.8/3, with FOX getting a few more total viewers. The CW went with "One Tree Hill."

At 10 p.m., Olympic ratings peaked at 19.8/31 as swimmer Michael Phelps secured his third gold medal. "CSI: Miami" posted a 4.5/7 for CBS, and the finale of "The Mole" drew a 2.0/3 for ABC.

I'm confused ivanhater and i may be wrong. So far phelps has 3 gold medals so far. Mark Spitz holds the record of 7 gold medals in a single olympics. Phelps has 5 races tonight?

Yep...tonight is probably going to be another Swimming-Gymnastics night. Something I didnt know until today that the top 5 swimmers of every race (including prelims) must take a blood test immediately after the swim. How does phelps have any blood left?

No, tonight would make him the recordholder by CAREER numbers(his 2004 medals also). His goal of 8(to break Spitz's record) is from a single Olympics. He won't reach that til Saturday Night(assuming things go as planned).

fact, according to NBC this is the most watched Olympics ever, topping Atlanta in 1996.

No. The career record for gold medals it 9. Phelps got 6 in 2004 and 3 so far in 2008. Tonight he can get #10.

NBC has the ad now about 74 million watching last night alone. That alone is staggering. Sadly, thats probably all they get in a month without the olympics.

I heard a number that nearly 1/3rd of all people in the world were/are/will watch the olympics, blasting out of the water the previous record.

 So true.

Through last night, 157 million across all the networks of NBC(that is just U.S. viewers which is more than half the population), 14 million more than the first 4 days of Athens.

Although tonight may be a different story, the last few nights the Olympics have been largely the main topic in the chatroom. Everyone is invited in to talk about the Olympics or the tropics.
