Evacuations Beginning!

#1 Postby wx247 » Mon Jul 14, 2003 12:10 pm

The City of Galveston recommends voluntary evacuation of the West End of Galveston Island due to predicted high tides between 2:00-2:30 pm today and at 8:00 am tomorrow morning. We recommend that residents calmly make preparations to leave the west end of the island this afternoon or this evening. Routes may be closed due to high tides if they reach 3.5 - 4 feet along FM 3005 and/or low-lying areas.

The recommended evacuation route from the West End of the island is to travel east on FM 3005 and take the Causeway to SH 6, I - 45, or SH 146. The recommended evacuation route for Port Bolivar is to travel NE on 87 to 124 and drive through Winnie.

For more information on disaster preparedness, please see the Municipal Channel, Channel 16, or see http://www.cityofgalveston.org. More information will be posted as it becomes available.

They've scheduled a meeting for all essential personnel here at UTMB shortly. So I guess they'll decided if we should stay or go.

My thoughts -- if they agree that she's going to POC, then they *might* not make us come in to work tomorrow since we'll get nasty stuff and flooding (or at least, they'll let us leave early tomorrow). If they think she's coming more north of POC (closer to us), they may tell us to leave today and possibly evacuate.

I'll update you all as I can from the island, but if evacs are decided upon, I won't be here at my office anymore and my computer at home will get packed up. I'll send one last one if that's the case and then I'll check back when it's possible and safe.

Still here for now though. :D
