On Radar, it appears to be making good progress. On vis, it looks like it is still moving quite slow:

Yeah Emmett_Brown, I think the convection onland maybe reducing a little bit making it look like its moving a little faster but there does appear to be some westward motion now.

Convection on the west side of the storm seems to be building - maybe Fay is transferring some of the energy from its stronger quadrants.

The center is so big, the western edge will be nearing the big bend shortly. This is a huge circulation... probably already starting to sniff the hot waters of the GOM...

How much will it weaken when it moves west over land (Florida)?
I realize it will strenghten again if/when it hits the gulf waters, but am curious what the land will do to it.

Make sure Fay gets the memo this time to weaken over land.
I don't think anything is set in stone yet and I don't think anyone charged with forecasting her does yet either.

on radar, convection looks to be thinning out on the north side.

I feel your frustration!!!!!
Today is the day of all days the kids should be home, winds and rain especially the ladder are far worse today than they were on Tuesday, we are having to steady be in the rain today moving our sump pump around our backyard to pump out alot of standing water, *sigh*. I still think things will be okay for the kids but it just doesn't make since they jumped the gun on Tuesday but pretty much ignore the forecast for today???? Like I said I am sure it will be okay for them, but I am just trying to make sense of what they are thinking....... :?: :?:

Well, I was the vocal one who opposed closing Palm Beach County schools on Tuesday and laughed at Dade and Broward for being closed on Monday.

However, I changed my mind when at 6:30 AM Tuesday when I would be sitting at the bus stop with my kids; the rain was sideways and winds were gusting to 40-50 MPH. I was wrong to question closing for a Tropical Storm.

What if a gust pushes a bus off the road and kids get hurt?
What if the bus has to go through a flooded road and goes into a ditch??

School officials would say they were "sorry" and parents would not forgive themselves for sending their kids into harms way.

The school officials you are both referring to "dropped the ball".

Well I can tell you if they were riding the bus they would not have gone, or I would have drove them. And also if there were tornado watches and warnings for us they would have stayed home.
But luckily, the school is a few blocks away so I pretty much know we are experiencing the same conditions weather wise,
also I drop and pick them up from school. I agree that they "dropped the ball". Buses should not be running today here in Orange county.

Depends whether it makes the gulf at all bayoubebe, even due west would only give it a few hours I guess so odds are it'll stay overland and slowly weaken and wind down.

Maybe it's because it's been sitting over my house for two days, but since 11:00 or so, it appears that FAY is moving at a fairly good clip now.

Does anyone have actual speed from the last hour or so?

I think Mark/Jesse's observation from Ormond made the 11AM advisory:

THERE WAS A RECENT UNOFFICIAL OBSERVATION FROM THE
AREA JUST NORTH OF ORMOND BEACH OF A GUST OF 65 MPH...105 KM/HR.

I have reports from friends/family near Jax of assorted power outages as well...they are in for a long day...

The lulls in between bands is deceiving.
I can't be too upset with the school officials. It's hard to make a judgement when the NHC can't even be sure of strength or track.
But I still say that as of 5am in the metro area, there was enough evidence to err on the side of caution, once again.
After the 2004 season, all the districts 'built in' at least 3 make-up days for weather. I guess they're trying to ration them based on still being in the 1st half of the season

Seems like according to recon the center is fixed towards the southern side of that big center, due west will get it into the gulf from that point but depends on the exact motion, anything more than say 280 then it seems unlikely this makes the gulf.

Even though this was a Florida cross over system, it's very rare to have a tropical system landfall in NE Florida from the east.
