Frozen Shoulder

#1 Postby CajunMama » Wed Aug 27, 2008 8:52 pm

I had to end up going to the orthopedist this afternoon. I've been having pain in my right shoulder for about the last 4 months. I'm one of those people who say, "oh it's going to get better" and i put off going to the doctor. I've been having limited mobility in my shoulder along with the pain and i'm sleeping poorly because when i do finally get comfortable and fall asleep, i roll over and move my shoulder the wrong way and i wake up in pain. So i finally broke down and went to the doctor. After taking xrays he diagnosed it as a frozen shoulder. I will have physical therapy 3 times a week for 3 weeks then i'll go back to see him. This next month doesn't sound like fun.

No indeed, it does not sound like fun Kathy. But I know how much you'd like to get back to normal. Physical therapy is painful but necessary sometimes. 2 years ago, myy mom broke her arm up high near her shoulder and had severe pain. Therapy helped her once the sling came off. Now's she's doing very well and she's in her 80s. You're half her age. I know you can do this but it does suck in meantime. Pardon my french........I've sprained my ankles so many times, I've lost count, at least a dozen, when you suddenly can't walk or function as you usually do, in your case moving your shoulder and arm, it just affects everything you do each day! So frustrating.....

Here's a trick I use, quite often. I project forward. If your doctor recommends therapy for one month, then focus on October. Try not to think how difficult September will be. But rather how much better you'll be feeling in October!

Wishing you my best.

I'm wondering the same thing but just type it in Wikipedia. Maybe it's stiff for no reason and can't move?

I too am having pain in my left shoulder and it sounds like what you have . I have limited mobility with it. I can't extend my arm straight out in any direction. I can't fasten my bra with both hands like I used . Now i have to fasten it in front and twist it around into position and pull up the straps. I had the shoulder Xrayed at my last visit with my doctor at the VA center in Tampa. Haven't found out the results yet.
I don't know why my shoulder hurts but I suspect that something else is wrong with it because if I move my arm backwards while the arm is bent at the elbow to the point of where you could put your hand back to scratch the back will result in intense burning pain in the upper arm .I can't put the arm up over my head or the same pain gets me again. Once I stop , the pain will continue for a couple of minutes and then will eventually fade away.
I hope that your PT will help you ease the pain in your shoulder

Daylily, that sounds EXACTLY what my shoulder feels like. When you're laying in bed do you have to lay on your back and then fold your arm to where your hand is resting on your chest?

I found some good info on it on the mayo clinic website

Yes, except that I am laying on my right side. I am a side sleeper. I either have it folded over my chest and under my chin or it is lying along my left side straight . I too wake up with pain. My Dr gave me a prescription for the pain but it doesn't help that well. My first visit with her she said she thought it sounded like arthritis . What I know about arthritis is that it affects joints, not muscle tissue. My pain is in the muscle tissue not the bone. I have to take at least 1800mg of ibuprofen when I go to bed so I can go to sleep. I can't think of any injury I have ever that that injured my shoulder in any way. I went to the mayo clinic link and read the information. Not much they can do for us is there?

I am taking an anti inflammatory already, the ibuprofen is one. But it doesn't
cure it . Any time I use my left arm for carrying things, depending on how heavy they are can cause pain in the arm. By heavy I mean a gallon jug of milk, or detergent, a 5 lb bag of potatoes just so you know how little weight it takes to cause pain. Any sudden movement with it causes very intense muscle pain that feels like some one is twisting the muscle with fire ants biting it at the same time. The pain comes suddenly but fades away slowly.. Even raising my hand in the air past my head will cause the pain.

CajunMama, I hope the PT will help you. The last time my right shoulder was like this I went to Watson Clinic be cause we still had insurance then and they put a little electric thing on the shoulder and turned on and it did not help one little bit. I had to suffer with that shoulder for over 6 months before it cleared up by itself. The last thing Watson Clinic said they could do was a cortisone shot so I said lets do it. They gave me the shot but I couldn't even tell if it did any good. Now we don't have insurance and the only Dr's we can see are the ones at the VA center in Tampa. So far the only thing that has helped me with is my meds I have to take to replace my thyroid. Before hubby lost his job, my meds were 25.00 every 30 days. Now I get a 3 month supply for that amount from the VA.
