Take your photographs, negatives videos and old home movies with you. These cannot be replaced unless you have them stored on electronic media somewhere. This is the most critical advise that someone who has lost everything can give anyone. Trust me. You won't regret it. You can get a new house, new furniture and new things, but you can't get new photographs.

True. Best thing I did before Katrina was to back up all pictures and financial data on a CD. We still lost some pics but nothing really important. I would also add to take anything that is special to you that you wouldn't/couldn't replace. Sounds dumb, but I always take my guitars because they would be "luxury" items that I wouldn't have the money to replace. And you may think you will have the money from your insurance, but could be unlikely. Our insurance paid off pretty well, and we thought we would have 100K left over to pay bills. Turned out that construction costs drove our construction budget up 350%.
