I'm not a doom and gloomer and often don't agree with Bastardi (even though I concede his superior expertise). That's crazy stuff there. For everyone from the voice of experience:

Take your photographs, negatives videos and old home movies with you. These cannot be replaced unless you have them stored on electronic media somewhere. This is the most critical advise that someone who has lost everything can give anyone. Trust me. You won't regret it. You can get a new house, new furniture and new things, but you can't get new photographs.

True. Best thing I did before Katrina was to back up all pictures and financial data on a CD. We still lost some pics but nothing really important. I would also add to take anything that is special to you that you wouldn't/couldn't replace. Sounds dumb, but I always take my guitars because they would be "luxury" items that I wouldn't have the money to replace. And you may think you will have the money from your insurance, but could be unlikely. Our insurance paid off pretty well, and we thought we would have 100K left over to pay bills. Turned out that construction costs drove our construction budget up 350%.

I know it's still way down there, but from what I'm reading it sounds like it will strenghten quickly and then start moving a bit faster

Where are you in La? From what my parents on da Wessbank tell me, it's all over the news so tuning in to local news would be your best bet.

Well Gustav did end up doing the Ivan shuffle, thats one for a study I think! :P

Convection on the northern side is really blowing up, probably got a totally closed eyewall again I'd bet, looking increasingly classic, could well be a hurricane by the time recon goes in there.

We should really wait till he's completely clear of Jamica before we declare that he is moving this way or that way.

I'm hoping the chat posts will be held to a minimum today. Let's talk about Gustav and keep chat stuff out of here ... pretty please. :)

I think I can start to see the center in this loop and it, unfortunately, looks quite impressive.

"he is getting larger and stronger"
we'll call him Leon...

a few might get that one.

Gustav is definitely getting that classic look.

WOW!!! I just saw the GFDL...that would be a disaster!! I pray NOLA does not take a direct hit! Because all those that were affected by katrina will be affected again..That would be terrible!

I'm under the impression that MANDATORY evacuations are in effect if Gustav reaches Category 3 intensity with t-minus 60 hours to landfall.

Some very cold cloud tops are spouting up near the center.

I was wondering about that little spot...

As others are saying Gustav is really ramping up, not really surprising given the ideal conditions and amazing heat content, I can't wait to see what recon suggests!

I'm bumping this up as a reminder that things were really getting out of hand yesterday.

That's what I have heard also, and I believe was posted here.

2 1/2 hours old; center may be closer to land than it appears on visible, I really can't tell.

Yep it will be real interesting cycloneye, nice bursting convection in what probably is a rapidly developing eyewall on that western side.
