We are on the wrong side of the storm for the tornados. Normally they are on the N ahd E side of a landfalling system. Not expecting much weather from Gustav in this area today. Maybe some squalls near the TX/LA border later today.

Eyewall trying to build back into the eastern side from the south but the eye is pretty much onshore now, will get an offical landfall shortly I'd think.

Just to the east of BR.

I was expecting to wake up in the middle of the night from wind and rain ... nothing here. Maybe 10 mph winds right now. Looks like about 30 minutes until we get the big mass of rain though. I expect things will pick up at that point.

So Grand Isle has also got a gust of cat-2 strength, Chacor you can still see the eye fairly well there on that image.

Gust to Cat 2 strength? Aside from the fact that gusts have no category scale, 86 mph is a cat 1. 86 kt would be a cat 2.

Anyway the eyewall is actually rewapping back around again compared to about 2hrs ago.

Thought I'd come on and check things out while I still have power and internet. Wish I hadn't according to the forecast track, the darn center is going to pass right over my house  We are located south of Lafayette parish, in Youngsville.
Thankfully the wind profile looks like it won't be more than sustained TS, gusting to just over 100mph. Looks like we'll be looking ol' Gusty in the eye around 5pm. Thank God its in daylight.

(I'm getting my info courtesy of a private forecast company called impact weather my husbands company pays the big bucks for).

Its just starting to get very breezy out, I think its gusting to around 30, we are just starting to be able to hear wind noise from inside. and checking the entergy maps, I think I'm going to go make some coffee while I can. Oi, this is going to be a long day.

Surge pix from Biloxi, lapping at the base of the sea wall in front of the house.. I'd estimate it to be about 7-8 feet atm.

Waves are impressive for Biloxi, which only get waves from high winds.. from what I've seen between 3-5 feet.. watching this easy to understand how they can just pummel your house..

Getting windy in Baton Rouge but hardly any rain, the northeast of the storm really died down in that department.

NHC director Bill Read said in his 1203 UTC podcast update that Gustav is in the process of making landfall now.

Just received an e-mail from my aunt in Guanajay, Cuba, and the power was back at 1:30 AM today. Fortunately they were without power just one day. They got power back quickly just outside Guanajay there is a factory where they make buses and other vehicles to export.

As a reference how close Gus passed from Guanajay.

Yep sure looks like it on radar now, should get offical word through on a landfall pretty soon I'd have thought.
