Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games: Day 3

#1 Postby Chacor » Sat Sep 06, 2008 10:09 am

Two weeks after the end of the Olympic Games, the Beijing Paralympic Games are now underway. The opening ceremony — just like its Olympic counterpart, absolutely amazing — has just concluded.

Going to be a very interesting 12 days of Paralympic sport.

Certain events are streamed live on the International Paralympic Committee's official internet TV channel at http://www.paralympicsport.tv.

New world record in Paralympic LC3/4 men's 1k cycling time trial.

Average speed clocked on the WR run by the LC3 rider (only one functioning lower limb) was 48 km/h (30 mph). Don't think even many able-bodied riders could ride at 48 km/h.

Great Britain continue their cycling run of form from the Olympics into the Paralympics with their third gold today. Race wasn't even finished but was called after the GBR rider lapped his Korean opponent in the individual pursuit.

Absolute farce in the women's T54 (wheelchair) 5000m race. There was an accident on the second-to-last lap, and on the final lap as the five (of 11) still running were coming down the straight, they had to swerve to avoid an official running on to help those injured.

After being awarded their medals and having a medal ceremony, they've now been told to return their medals and that the race will be re-run on Friday.

Canada (gold) and Great Britain (silver) are both protesting the order to rerun the race.
