Re: ATL HANNA: Tropical Storm - Discussion
Hi...here, near Yorktown, VA I'm really surprised that we haven't gotten more rain, and the wind...while gusty, really hasn't been much to speak of...I've seen worse during a windy day in spring. Since the center of circulation will come pretty close to, if not directly over us in the coming hours, we may see a bit more...particularly with tidal flooding around 2 pm, but so far, so good. TS Earnesto a couple of years ago was MUCH worse than this in the way of sustained winds and torrential rain...so I'm very pleasantly surprised that this looks a bit like a non-event so far; hope it continues to be so...

JB is taking his son to the Jersey swamps so he can experience a tropical storm. JB's Dad lives in New Jersey. I think that is special, and nice.
His son is a few years older than when this picture was taken...
We're waiting for Hannah's full force here in Southern New Jersey. We've already had a few bands come through since last night. It is MUGGY as all get out.
We are under a Tropical Storm Wind Warning and Flood Watch. It looks like the majority of the rain will be to my west. We're looking at 4 - 7 inches of rain possible. It's going to be a wild afternoon and evening.
Picking up in Cape May County.we NEED rain.......

For those interested. Still blogging about TS Hanna. I'll update again this evening, or before if need be.

Re: ATL HANNA: Tropical Storm - Discussion
The prediction charts show Hanna going to Boston, then to Nova Scotia. I suspect you will get the same type of weather we had in Virginia - lots of rain and maybe some wind in some places. We had hardly any wind here in Chester, Virginia but I understand some places did have some wind in Virginia.
I think I know why it's going to Boston. It's heading to Harvard University, or maybe MIT. This is because "Tropical Storm Hanna" is "An Important Scholar", or at least you can rearrange the letters to have it spell that.

Re: ATL HANNA: Tropical Storm - Discussion
Here in North Jersey it is pretty wet. Earlier today the air was so still and thick it was hard to breathe. Now the rain is here. Including the 1/2" that came through in the early morning hours we have had about 4" of rain so far. Had a band come through a little while ago that was coming down at 3.15 inches/hour.
Pressure is at 29.35 and appears to still be falling.
No wind to speak of, though I do live in a river valley and I don't get an accurate reading compared to the surrounding area.

Re: ATL HANNA: Tropical Storm - Discussion
Just a good soaking rain here, that let up about 2 hours ago. The sun is starting to come out. It was starting to get bone dry in the region so this will help offset it.
No real wind but I didn't expect it.

Re: ATL HANNA: Tropical Storm - Discussion
We had a huge rainfall on Friday in Chester, south of Richmond, and then two rainfalls on Saturday, totaling 2.81 inches. The fastest winds we had were about 25-30 mph, a strong breeze, right after all the rain was over - they put 3% of the area in the dark. It now is so clear out that I could easily see Venus near the horizon at dusk, as well as a nearly-half moon. Now I hope they repeal the mandatory watering restrictions here, and that Lake Chesdin has enough water to make the boats float.

Re: ATL HANNA: Tropical Storm - Discussion
Torrential rain all afternoon, not alot of wind though, that seemed to be confined to the coast, 25mph I'd estimate as the highest I saw.
I'll post updates on flooding as I get them.

Re: ATL HANNA: Tropical Storm - Discussion
Hanna was a prolific rainmaker in the Carolinas. Here's a nice little composite showing where and how much across the Carolinas and southern Va.

We went to downtown Faynam yesterday to take my daughter to an anime convention and Cross Creek (a usually tranquil little stream) had risen up and flooded several roads. If Hanna had been a slow mover, she could have been a real problem.

It dropped a lot of rain in interior NC, but was a very dry storm for the coast as far as tropical systems go. This was the type of dry storm that causes the salt spray to "burn" the trees and vegitation for several miles away from the beach. I noticed this morning some pecan trees are already turning brown. Other types will follow in a day or two. Also, we had more power outages after the winds had died down late yesterday afternoon than we did during the storm. A guy that works for the power company told me it was because the salt spray had collected on the power lines and was shorting out on the poles. Will keep on until it rains to clean the lines off.

Very strange system, not often do they have more moisture on the west side than east side.

Re: ATL HANNA: Extratropical - Discussion
I had 2.20" of rain in my rain gauge from Hannah. The majority of the rain was to the west - in Pennsylvania. We really didn't have any wind until Hannah's "center" came over us in the evening. By then the rain was already out of here. We had gusts of maybe 30 mph.
I'm glad she was gently on us - we really needed that rain though.
