Maybe folks are spent from today's back and forth discussions and are taking a breather until tomorrow. If Ike continues progressing, you know things will heat up with the local media and on the boards.

I think we're all taking a breather before the real onslaught begins!
Wxman57's post earlier about folks in the HOU area seemingly unaware of Ike is being repeated here in the state capital. Most folks I talk to have no idea that we easily could be staring down the barrel of a catastrophic hurricane this weekend. I keep thinking about the "Isaac's Storm" book and how most people in Galveston had no idea what was about to hit them. Hopefully my coastal Texans are a little more aware tonight.

I'm not sure how everyone else feels, but this model shifting is nerve-racking! Everyone in my office was talking about a Houston strike today and were worried.

It's still 5 days out from houston.
As for the strength of the storm I don't see wind speeds getting beyond 95mph until it enters the gulf or pulls more west from Cuba. It's just too close to land to rapidly intensify at this point.

OK, I should at least say hello.
I'm a new member, recently discovered the site and have been lurking lately since this season has been keeping us on our toes! I'm a resident at Texas Children's in Houston, so naturally I'm very interested when storms make it into the gulf. Looks like I might end up having a long Friday night/Saturday....we'll likely institute our emergency plans at the hospital even if Ike does end up tracking somewhat south of Houston. Anyway, thanks for all the great info...I've learned a lot since I started lurking and I think these weather patterns are pretty fascinating.
Carry on!

Carry on!

KIII-TV has an interesting video piece from their meteorologist tonight.

Keep in mind, this was before the 00z models, but still interesting nonetheless.

I totally agree. And people I've talked to who have even heard of Ike think I'm just a hurricane nut who gets all hyper about any storm out there. I'm not hyper, I'm just watching.

No 290*. Giant wobble and way back over water where it will only rebound.
Close to a double hit in the same place in Cuba like Jeanne & (that other one).
This is some storm!

SE Tx here... I'm just exhausted.
Even though Edourd didn't amount to much, it was still kind of stressful. Then we were all ramped up about Gustav... Now it's Ike... It's just like, make up your mind already you stupid storm!
If we've got to evacuate again, so be it... we're just all tired of stressing about it. Ready to get it over with. I personally didn't evacuate with Gustav (I was packed and ready to go, just never went). But everyone around here is really worried about what will happen if Houston has to evacuate. We're all having Rita nightmares.
