Anxiously awaiting the 11am ET updates from the NHC... I have a feeling despite (most models consensus) that there will be a shift NE in the track by a degree or so.

KLP124 wrote:They called for a mandatory evacuation in SE Texas two weeks ago and ALOT of people heeded the warning and left -- fully expecting to be reimbursed since they were asked/told to leave (not saying whether it's right or wrong...) Anyway, FEMA has said that since the storm did not hit our area and a federal disaster declaration wasn't declared that no one will be eligible for any type of reimbursement. Some people are really angry -- "The local government told me to leave and I did even though I couldn't afford it." And since you're dealing with a voting public and elected officials, I can see where they might be hesitant to anger their constituants. Not to mention all the money the local counties spent evacuating people who couldn't evacuate themselves...

I know a lot of people around here who have said they won't evacuate this time until they are absolutely certain they're going to be hit because they can't afford to leave again (no pay, spent money on gas, hotels, meals, etc.) I can see both sides of the argument but I didn't leave and I don't think my life is anyone's responsibility but my own. :)

Here in South Louisiana we had a mandatory evacuation as well with Gustav. Went all the way to North Texas. Returned to very little structural damage, no surge. Applied for FEMA before I returned home 5 days later with a $700.00 hotel bill and at least $250.00 in gas. Before I even got my electricity restored (another nightmare), FEMA was at my door wanting to do an inspection. I was denied any and all FEMA money because I didn't have structural damage. My insurance company does not pay for evacuation living expenses. And today, we have learned that FEMA will not pay for hotel bills for evacuations. PERIOD. However, with a potential CAT 3 hurricane coming my way, I don't need the Government to tell me to leave.

That seems like alot of B.S. to me. Shelters were setup and provided. People just didn't want to use them. They were thinking they could get some nights on the town on the Gov. The shelters were no where near full. You don't have to get a hotel and the shelter will feed you. Might not be comfortable, but its free. I'm a democrat so I'm all for the gov helping but people need to take personal responsibility. Sorry I just get worked up about people with expectations.

Like I said... didn't say it was wrong or right, just an observation. I personally know of a lady who uses the same daycare as me that couldn't put her kids in there this week because she spent all of her money at Schliterbahn while they were evacuated!
I know you weren't commenting...I just couldn't refrain from commenting. People like the lady you know bother me only when they start asking the government to start paying for their utter lack of judgement. ARgggggg! Remember the lady who evac'd from N.O. Who said she'd spent all her money on hotels and food and told the hotel owner she could pay because she spent all her money on gas and food evac'ing. "The goverments got to pay the bill, I don't. She was 1/2 a mile away from an empty shelter! Makes me furious!!!!!!! :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr:

I don't expect anything from the government in terms of an evacuation. I'm in a surge zone and there is still a risk of being affected by a storm, I'm out of here and I'll pony up the cost.

One lesson many of these storms should teach everyone is that you shouldn't rely on the government for your safe being, either financially or regarding if you should leave or not. That is a decision that rests upon you and your family.
