Today is the anniversary of man's landing on the Moon. Where were you on this date in 1969? I was watching Walter Cronkite as he described the scene and the world watched the image of Neil Armstrong become the first human to set foot on the Moon.

EAGLE LANDS ON THE MOON
AT 1:47 PM EDT, JULY 20, 1969 THE LUNAR MODULE (LM) "EAGLE" CARRYING
NEIL ARMSTRONG AND EDWIN "BUZZ" ALDRIN, SEPARATED FROM THE COMMAND
MODULE "COLUMBIA".
THE LM LANDED IN MARE TRANQUILITATIS (THE SEA OF TRANQUILITY) AND
ARMSTRONG STEPPED ONTO THE LUNAR SURFACE AT 10:56:15 P.M. JULY 20 EDT
AND MADE HIS NOW FAMOUS STATEMENT "THAT'S ONE SMALL STEP FOR MAN, ONE
GIANT LEAP FOR MANKIND." HIS CREW MATE ALDRIN FOLLOWED 19 MINUTES
LATER.
ARMSTRONG AND ALDRIN DEPLOYED THE EARLY APOLLO SCIENTIFIC EXPERIMENTS
PACKAGE (EASEP) AND OTHER INSTRUMENTS, TOOK PHOTOGRAPHS, AND COLLECTED
21.7 KG OF LUNAR ROCK AND SOIL. IN ALL THEY TRAVERSED A TOTAL DISTANCE
OF ABOUT 250 METERS ON THE LUNAR SURFACE. THE EVA ENDED AT 5:11:13 UT
WHEN THE ASTRONAUTS RETURNED TO THE LM AND CLOSED THE HATCH.
APOLLO 11 WAS THE FIRST MISSION IN WHICH HUMANS WALKED ON THE LUNAR
SURFACE AND RETURNED TO EARTH. THE LM TOOK OFF FROM THE MOON ON JULY
21 AND THE CREW RETURNED TO EARTH ON JULY 24.

There is a small group that has consistently claimed that the landing was "staged"...it began with the "student left", as something the Government concocted to take public attention away from the war in Vietnam...and it still has its proponents today (remember the @$$ that badgered one of the Apollo astronauts, now in his late 70's, to the point that he "decked" the bum? It was on national TV, not long ago).
Personally, I believe we WERE there in 1969; the technology necessary to believably "stage" such an event for the public was unavailable until the late 70's, by private "pioneering" filmmakers such as George Lucas.

Naw Bill...my Granny just couldn't grasp the concept of men landing on a light...the way she percieves the moon (from the Bible).
She's still the same way about technology. Granny thinks I'm typing to other folks on my tv -- she simply can't grasp the concept of Webtv (as being like a computer).
She and my great aunt both think anyone with a tv set can see what I see on websites, what I type..and my website, simply by finding the right channel

Ya know.......I woke up at 0230 thinking about this tread *sheeesh*.......I wasn't in the sixth grade, let's try the 4th grade.....sorry "LOL!" Dang...if I was in the 6th grade, that would make me "HOW OLD?"
Naw.......it wasn't staged, I just had to throw that in there, I mean, if so......where did they come up with the photos of the earth and moon like that?

Let's see, I was 14 then. Several families in our neighborhood were having a cookout in one yard (picture a Wonder Years moment). And on the patio we were playing 45's (there's a blast from the past). One minute we kids were dancing to Honky Tonk Woman if I remember correctly, and the next all the adults are saying - come inside kids, you have to see this. And so we all crammed into one living room and watched. It was incredible to say the least. I remember people just looking at eachother as if to say - is this real? I believe it was real but it almost seemed impossible. Later in the evening, I recall folks looking up at the moon. You almost couldn't stop staring at it. That might have been one of those sleep-out nights - another Wonder Years scene in my neighborhood. You wanted to watch the coverage on TV but then you wanted to stare at the moon too. In our area it was a clear night so it was mesmerizing.
