Charley was not a cat 5. It was not the most intense hurricane to ever hit the US. He is quite different than Ike in that he was certainly more intense (at this point anyway) and was very compact. Howver he was quite strong, intensifying as he hit land and moving quickly so he caught a lot of people off guard that were well inland, i.e. Orlando and really brought an unexpected wallup to many inland areas.

Ike has the potential to knock out power to millions. Such a broad area of hurricane force winds...even ts winds can result in power loss...is going to mean people are going to be without power for a while. The resources needed for such an undertaking will require a multi-state effort to assist the local power company. Wilma knocked out power to 3 million in south florida and it took weeks to get everyone back up....with most folks being in the dark at 1-2 weeks in my neighborhood. Ike could knock out power to twice that amount of people.

There are a few things that i wish i had had after wilma that would have been a huge help - a phone that is not cordless and so doesn't need to be charged and a car charger for my cell phone. Make sure you have those before the storm hits!

Well thats a good thing because I had seen an article where the mayor was saying that they werent going to do mandatory evacs, at least they've seen some common sense at last!

Mandatory island evacuation expected

Galveston city officials called a news conference at 9:30 a.m. and are expected to call for a mandatory evacuation of all portions of the island.

Mandatory area evacuations already called are:

Tiki Island

Clear Lake Shores

Kemah

Bolivar Peninsula

Omega Bay

San Leon

Bacliff

Freddiesville

Jamaica Beach

West end of Galveston

Zones A & B in Harris County, including zip codes 77586, 77058, 77059, 77062, 77520, 77546, 77571, 77598

Areas urged to evacuate, but not under mandatory order:

Low-lying areas of Dickinson and La Marque

Friendswood

Those with special needs who registered for 211 will be picked up. Those who did not register with 211 should call 311 immediately if they need help evacuating.

Emergency evacuation routes include:

- Interstate 10 west to San Antonio

- Interstate 45 north to Dallas

- Interstate 59 north to Nacogdoches

- Highway 290 west to Austin or Waco.

Refueling stations will be placed along the routes.

There is no plan for contraflow lanes, as of 8:30 a.m. Thursday.



All area public school districts are closed today and Friday including: Clear Creek, Dickinson, Friendswood, Galveston, Hitchcock, La Marque, Santa Fe, Texas City and High Island.



Sounds like they got a fairly good plan.

The other thing is I've just seen a wave height thing on another forum and the difference between Ike and Gustav is huge, Ike is producing a far bigger swell then Gustav ever did in the gulf, probably its huge size and also very long track over the gulf is really ramping it up.

At this point I am not sure of current population. All should be able to get out to places where they are not in a surge area. Normally they say it is about 36 hours to get everyone off. Some have left already.

Yes, wave height is far more a function of fetch (the distance over which winds prevail) than of peak wind.

Just announced: MANDATORY EVACUATION OF ALL OF GALVESTON ISLAND. No shelters will be open on the Island itself.

HISD and Ft. Bend ISD schools are canceled tomorrow. KISD should follow shortly.

Ike is forecasted now to have a huge impact on the oil rigs and processing capabilities. That is nearly the worst case scenario for those. Look for a huge rise in gas prices very quickly that will persist over the next few months. This will probably have a bigger overall $$ impact than Katrina in my opinion.

I couldn't explain why Ike is a slow intensifier if I tried. The storm is a broad windfield, low windspeed for pressure hurricane. I call these "rollers" as opposed to tighter storms like Charley. Rollers tend to push more surge and have harder impact at lower intensity.

If you look at Ike you'll see that normal eye starting to show. This could be the final ramp up if the eye clears. Just in time for landfall.

NHC has been keen on track at this range so their landfall should be close. But this is a case where slightly right of track should be watched for because of the synoptic situation.
