Statement from our local met

#1 Postby bfez1 » Mon Jul 21, 2003 8:51 am

Well, we are, once again, dealing with somewhat unchartered territory with another Cape Verde storm forming so early. The climatology out there at this time of year is different than mid August and into September. Conditions seem to be similar to that of Claudette. The difference is that we also have a very strong trof for this time of year arriving in the Southeast U.S. midweek.

We've seen this repeated many times. If the trof ends up being weaker than forecast than a track to the Central Gulf is more likely. However, if the trof is quite strong and slow to pull out, then a Florida affect is more likely. Time will tell. Midweek is the breaking point on what this storm might do.

I will be watching this closely as I have family (stepmom, stepbrother, stepsister, and a half brother) who live in Central Florida; as well as friends (all my WxBuds; plus family friends as well)!

I am fairly certain us Texans can rest easy this time. The only possibilty of a threat would be a stall in the NE GOM and ridge build in pushing it W toward Texas. I just do not see it occurring.

P'cola area this time.
