Water is already spraying over the seawall since the surge is over 9 feet high and the seawall is 10. It's not gushing over like a waterfall yet but it will in a couple hours.

Wobble or right turn? From the latest 2 hour update.

This is not a forecast.

The number of people dismissing this storm is truly disturbing

Watching KHOU - seeing folks let their kids chuck rocks in the floodwater, texting, taking photos. Lets hope they decide to take cover and not be statistics.

hmm, i posted an hour ago about adults letting their kids play in flood waters, usually they at least wait until after the storm when there are downed power lines, snakes, sewage, etc so I guess those folks were getting a jump on the danger.

It LOOKS like a cold front, but it FEELS like a hot wet summer.

Still have power and am hoping hoping hoping that by some freak chance - we keep our power.

With all of this waiting around I understand what the 1900'ers went through.. and I understand the people down in Galveston who didn't leave. In the 25 years since Alicia, I've forgotten about all the WAITING there is... just waiting for the storm to come in... I keep thinking.. .maybe it won't be as bad as everyone keeps saying...

No one on my street has boarded up their house. Some people didn't even bother taking down hanging plants, etc. But - I went outside a couple of hours ago, and you could hear hammering and chain saws... I guess people decided at the last minute to make minimal preparations.

We don't have any boards up at our house - but I rent the house two doors down from my parents so if there is any problems, we will change houses.

Big worry is Jeff Master's quote: We can expect Ike to cause the largest and longest-lived power outage in Texas history, with power knocked out along a 200-mile wide swath in eastern Texas and extreme western Louisiana extending 300 miles inland to I-20. Dallas will be at the fringe of the region of widespread power outages, and should not suffer major power failures.

My dad is trying to decide what to do and where to go if that happens. My parents are 74 and 75 respectively, and they would only go if I go, and their dog and my dog and my three cats too. And then, where to go? In my opinion, everyone else would be trying to get out at that point - just to escape the power outages - during Alicia we were out of power for 21 days. And there would be a long stretch of road without power for gas pumps.

So... those are the current thoughts of this Houstonian...

cheers to all

Not much reason to board up for Ike. Heck, hurricane force winds shouldn't last more than 8-12 hours before he's gone.

Ike is already retired, you say that based on its history. Cuba will do the job and the US will supplement more details for retirement.

Don't forget the Turks. Grand Turk was almost wiped off the map.

Report from Northeast Houston:

As some of you might know from earlier posts today, I left my home in Friendswood (SE of downtown Houston about 25-30 miles from Galveston) due to the fact it is in a storm surge zone. I'll be riding out the storm with family on the Northeast side of town well away from any surge.

As of now, we're still getting some steady winds, but I doubt anything near tropical storm force at this point. I imagine the winds will pick up in the next couple hours. I drove around a little earlier and noticed about 5-10% of houses were boarded up and many people are still sitting around on porches, some even barbecuing. I'm sure that will change soon.

I just noticed on KHOU that reported flooding is already taking place less than a mile from my house without a drop of rain yet. Not only am I worried about how to make it thorugh the night, but I'm not even sure if I'll have a home to come back to. The next few weeks will be extremely difficult to say the least if the storm keeps the current track. My wife and I need to determine where to go to have power, our home may be flooded or destroyed and her workplace in Galveston is likely destroyed as well. All this doesn't even seen real yet, but I'm sure it will hit me soon over the weekend. Please keep all of us here in Southeast Texas in your thoughts and prayers, especially for the thousands still in storm surge zones in Galveston, Texas City, Clear Lake, Kemah, Boliver, Baytown, Pasadena, Deer Park and other areas.

I do not know how long power will remain on as the power lines run through the woods near by, but I'll try to post updates later if possible.

tolakram, I think it was a wobble, since he's moved due west in the last frame.

At best... I would say wobble, most likely just the eye tightening and reforming as a small version of itself. Same reason why the storm appeared on radar to stall

Inland folks....don't let your guard down. reporter on national news said officials measuring potential power outages in weeks...not days.

Winds are definetely up now, relatively. Breezy, not quite windy, maybe 25, gusting to the 30s. I'm not the only house on my block boarded up now, as I see a neighbor on a ladder doing his second floor windows.

I see some neighbors with duct or even masking tape, but no point now explaining how it probably won't get the job done.

We have a couple of small windows facing neighbor houses not boarded ourselves, so we can get some air/light after Ike passes while we go outside to de-board. Got tape on them, just to keep the broken glass from flying around. I hope.

There's a dumbass in Houston standing in the floodwater next to the shore of the bay. Good way to die.
