Leaving surge zone probably saved your life...the rest will sort itself out....

Jagno wrote:Folks, I'm beginning to get concerned about evacuating after all. This afternoon a stark reality has hit those of us that are literally hundreds of miles from home in hotels and motels. Gas stations are closing every hour, posting out of gas signs and limiting gasoline to only 10 gallons per customer. Ten gallons of gasoline will not get my family home when the all clear is given. The few stations that are limiting the quantity are outrageous. When there is simply NO gas you cannot obtain it for love or money. So, here I sit watching my home and city being pounded and fearful that we won't make it back.

At this point many of us are so tempted to get as close to home as possible before gas runs completely out or reaches $5 gallon.

Texas has 256 counties....not sure about that 132 figure?

Definitely not all of Texas will be affected.

If you didn't evacuate, it may have been you and your family's life.

Another thing amazing about this storm, I remember in the first few dozen pages of this thread, back when Ike was an extremely compact Category 1 far out at sea I said something like, "Remember guys, just because a storm is small at formation DOES NOT mean it will be small for life."

Kinda seems prophetic at this point!

:rarrow: Tide gauges indicate that the next tide cycle has likely begun and storm surge will worsen along the NE Texas and SW Louisiana coast throughout the nighttime hours.

Sabine Pass... 8.13 feet surge. At 9.8 feet, catastrophic flooding occurs across Eastern Jefferson and Orange counties.
Calcasieu Pass... 9.97 feet surge. At 13.3 feet, most of Cameron Parish is under water.
North Lake Charles... 6.6 feet surge-induced flooding. At 6.0 feet, significant flooding occurs in recreational camps and homes.

Per Gulf Coast Pundit blog, part of Hilton in Clear Lake has collapsed. Very unofficial, no link.

Very bad news indeed, just goes to show this isn't only a small event and whilst it is centered on Galveston bay and Houston, region that suffered heavily from Rita are also suffering in a big way.

Forgive me if this has already been posted, but here is an EXCELLENT link I just discovered, a one page "storm summary" of tidal / surge levels all over the Gulf with clickable links for different towns.

Dry slot into core on south side should limit intensity. Probably peak now.

I don't think so, I think this is only a result of the eye's contraction, and it's basically a residue of the huge eye it had just a few hours ago.

First post over here. I apologize in advance if this is humor at someone else's expense, but it seems we could all use a laugh here. I just got a text message from a friend of mine. She's hunkered down in Katy. I'm paraphrasing what the message said, but here's the gist of it:

"The mayor of Houston has just put out a press release stating that Houston will change it's name to Tina Turner, because it's fixing to get slugged by Ike!"

Stay safe out there.
