KHOU reporter just said that the surge is running over the seawall and it looks like a river over the wall...

To answer your question...I don't know when landfall is declared. But I would imagine it is declared when Shep declares it and when Geraldo finally blows away. Those guys are the reason some people do not take hurricanes seriously. I am so glad to have just found this site in the last few days and will come here to learn and listen to reason when a storm is headed my way(I live two blocks from the beach in Venice FL.)Having lost my dear friend Windsor in hurricane Charley, I take hurricanes seriously and know just how deadly they can be. Watching that joker Geraldo is very upsetting, he looks almost giddy with glee, and he is a disservice to people who are being impacted by the storms and their loved ones who sit watching the TV and worrying about their loved ones. My prayers to all in Texas especially to all those in Shoreacres which is where I grew up.

Grandson with a Florida Hurricane crew is in Houma, Louisiana and last word was that wind gusts and flooding were getting really bad. I understand local levees are breached all around the Houma area. He's just 19 and this is his first such experience.

Hi Dixie, good to see you here tonight! So GS is getting his feet wet for the first time? He MAY get totally hooked on this. That's how it happens with plains tornado chasers...

Things are getting really nasty in a hurry now, I think you got here just in time.

Sand hitting you at 100 mph just plain hurts.

Sooner, sand hitting you at *30* mph just plain hurts. My wife and I made the mistake of going to Blowing Rocks when Ike was coming near the keys (great place with exposed limestone that at high tide gives a spectacular show of well.... Blowing Rocks) - steady 20-30mph winds drove us and our sandblasted camera glass away pretty quick.

Landfall is when the center of the eye crosses land.

I was on the beach during Isabel, sand hitting you at 40-50mph stings.

On another note, the wall has been overtopped for the first time in its history.

This is when it really gets ugly on G.I. I feel so sorry for the kids who were left there by their selfish, thoughtless parents.

Don't go in a building as Ike is "a cat 4 up in buildings" according to...need i say which network.

I kinda get what he may have meant....higher gusts in highrises....but not quite the impact as the headline he used

That's higher and Rita for sure. This could be worse than Rita.

LMAO Geraldo claims there was a 127 mph gust. You've got to be kidding me, it's all a show.
