Again, deaths and damage caused are not the only factors when it comes to countries requesting the retirement of storms.
Quote Environment Canada:

Quote Environment Canada:
http://www.atl.ec.gc.ca/weather/hurrica ... ire_e.html
Hurricanes that have a severe impact on lives or the economy are remembered for generations after the devastation that they have caused. Some go into weather history. In many cases it is felt that the future use of the name of such a devastating storm is inappropriate for reasons of compassion and sensitivity.
In consideration of the lost and damaged lives, the impact to economy, and the widespread destruction of trees through out two provinces, Environment Canada, on behalf of Nova Scotians and Prince Edward Islanders, requested that the name Juan be retired.
This request was granted at the annual meeting of the WMO RAIV Hurricane Committee on April 29, 2004. This was the first time that Canada had requested the retirement of a storm name.

Re: Retirement Surprises
Speaking of retirement, since it appears that Ike is a lock for retirement, and Ike itself replaced the retired Isidore, what's going to be the replacement male "I" name for 2014? The pickings are slim.
Igor (2010) and Isaac (2012) are the others in the rotation, and Irwin and Ignacio are being used in the EPac, so what does that leave? Ian? Irving? Isaiah? Ismael? Inigo (the Princess Bride hurricane)?

BTW, I don't think they would do Ismael, since that was retired in 1995 for an EPAC hurricane's name.

Re: Retirement Surprises
There are only a few more male names that begin with an I, maybe NHC should switch to some kind of naming system like the WPAC had pre-2000 with the names continuing year after year. Just something to think about, would have helped in 2005 when the names ran out.

I'm actually a tad bit flattered you gave opinions for nearly all of them (Hilda notwithstanding).

Ignatius, the Latin form of Ignacio, would work.
More male "I" names here...

Ignacio in 2002.
Hence, Ignatius. As in St. Ignatius of Loyola. One of the parishes near where I live is St. Ignatius of Loyola, and I used to go there for confession, because I figure the priests in my parish would recognize me. They just switched in regular diocescan priests there a year or two back, but St. Ignatius used to have Jesuits, who are very low on the guilt thing, as far as being Catholic goes, and made confession easy.
Anyway, Ignatius instead of Ignacio. Just like Ian, Sean, Juan, Ivan and John are all the same name, but in different languages.

Ichabod, Icarus, Ignacio, Irwin, Ivo. There are plenty of choices, no problem.

To repeat my list from the "2008 retirement" thread:
Ignace, Ilan, Irv, Irving, Ildefonso, Ilidio, Imperio, Indalecio, Inigo, Isarno, Isauro, Isidro, Italo, Ituriel, Imanol, Iago, Ichabod, Ira, Ivor, Icarus, Idris, Idwal, Ingram, Ingvar, Innes, Iorwerth, and Ithel
Ismael was retired from the EPAC list just a few years ago and so probably wouldn't be a good idea right now.

I really like the sound of Hurricane Icarus though. Ichabod is probably the only name on that list before it starts getting either obscure or into mythology, maybe Inigo would work too. I think they're going to eventually, before the end of our lifetimes, start 'unretiring' some names.

Re: Retirement Surprises
My opinions on them:
Hilda in 1955: 300+ Deaths and $120 million period damage. - Yes, should have been retired.
Carrie in 1957: 80 deaths from a shipwreck. - No, it didn't cause huge damage on a landmass so no one had a case.
Alma in 1966: 90 deaths and $210 million period damage. June major hurricane. - Yes
Francelia in 1969: 100 deaths. Low damage ($4.7 million) - Borderline
Dorothy in 1970: 51 deaths according to some sources. - No
Edith in 1971: 37 deaths and $25.4 million period damage. Category 5 landfall. - Yes
Belle in 1976: 5 deaths and $100 million period damage. - No
Claudette in 1979: 2 deaths, but $400 million period damage. - No, partly because it was a tropical storm (and certainly no Allison).
Beryl in 1982: 115 deaths in Cape Verde. - Not on the committee (I believe), so no way to get that retired.
Klaus in 1984: 2 deaths, but $152 million period damage. - No
Isabel in 1985: 180 deaths and $459 million period damage! - Borderline, case weakened by being only a tropical storm.
Juan in 1985: 24 deaths and $1.5 billion period damage. - Definitely yes.
Kate in 1985: 15 deaths and $700 million period damage. November major hurricane. - Borderline
Allison in 1989: 11 deaths and $560 million period damage. - No
Chantal in 1989: 13 deaths and $100 million period damage. - No
Marco in 1990: Merged with Klaus to cause decent damage. Should have been tossed out with Klaus. - Neither should have been retired.
Bret in 1993: 184 deaths. - I don't think Venezuela is on the committee?
Gert in 1993: 76 deaths and $166 million period damage. - Borderline
Alberto in 1994: 30 deaths and $531 million period damage. - Borderline
Gordon in 1994: Need I say anything? - Absolutely should have been, the death toll alone screams retirement.
Erin in 1995: 13 total deaths and $700 million period damage. - No

At this point I see no reason for them to "unretire" names. What is an "obscure" name varies by culture and generation. Neither Irving nor Ira would be thought unusual at all by most people over 50 in the USA. Ichabod only is "unobscure" to Americans because of the fictional character of Ichabod Crane. It would be very obscure in Latin America. Many of the names on the above list which seem obscure to you are not necessarily so in Latin America. And in modern times given names for humans in English, French, and Spanish speaking cultures are becoming more varied all the time. Ian would have seemed very obscure to most people in the USA a couple of generations ago, but now we are all familiar with it.
