K9 officer killed in hit & run

#1 Postby CajunMama » Mon Oct 13, 2008 5:56 pm

I know some may say it's only a dog but trained canines are considered a deputy. I understand that there's a really deep bond between the officer and his k9, possibly more of a bond than a regular pet because this dog will put his life on the line for his owner. I'm also shocked that the 2 cars that passed by didn't stop.

K9 OFFICER KILLED

A Lafayette Sheriff's Deputy is recovering and his K9 partner is dead after being hit near the fence line at the Entergy power station.

Captain, Kip Judice with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Department tells TV 10 around midnight, the deputy and his partner were checking the fence line at the Entergy power station on Cameron near its intersection with Macon Road.

That's when a car struck the dog killing him and dragging the officer. Judice also says there were two cars following the car that did not stop. The car is a dark in color.

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office is looking for anyone with any information into this hit and run to please call Crime Stoppers at 232-TIPS.

The other two cars were probably with the first one. That totally sucks. I'm sure that they will track down the car and it's occupants. :grr:

I was listening to katc, a local tv station, and they said there's going to be a memorial service for Hector, the k9 on wednesday with a police procession. Another officer was interviewed and she was saying that you are with your partner (dog) more than you are with your family because you are working and living with him.

Stephanie, that was my thought also about the other 2 cars not stopping. I just don't see how you can miss someone being dragged by a car.

I know a lot of dogs that are cleaner, more intelligent, and have more class than a good many humans.

I hope they catch the scumbags and throw them in jail for a long time :x

They've arrested a suspect...

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office on Tuesday arrested a man they say is responsible for the hit-and-run accident that left a K-9 deputy named Hector dead and his handler injured late Sunday night.

Nick Thomas, 39, of Lafayette, faces charges of negligent injury, hit-and-run with injury and reckless operation of a vehicle for the incident.

Police say evidence from the scene matched evidence on Thomas' black Mercedes, which led investigators to believe Thomas is responsible for the incident.

The K9 dog officers are very helpful from finding a missing person to a murder suspect by using their nose. They just need one article and they got their person. They also like to bite suspects and is really gratifying to watch one maul a criminal. :grrr:
