Re: ATL: Invest 93L - Recon Discussion
I double checked that 50 kt sfmr before posting it, wanted to make sure no flags were on it.

Considering it's double the FL winds, I'd say it's quite suspicious. We have quite a few real-live surface obs around the low and all are in the 15-25 kt range.
Have you also noticed that SFMR winds this year are almost always a good bit higher than FL winds? I think they need to do a good bit more calibration on those instruments. Will be interesting to query the presenters at next spring's hurricane conferences about these data.

I've seen that every recon mission I've worked. Sure looks like the calibration needs more work.

The observation appears to have been in an area of heavy squalls north of the center, but FL winds were only 22 kts. I know when the presenters at last year's AMS tropical conference talked about calibrating the SFMR they flew over buoys with known wind speeds only on days with no rain. Maybe the rain is interfering with the signal?

we don't fly calibration flights during the day.

I was thinking the same thing- sounds like a POJO question.

These are mesovortices rotating around inside the eye of Hurricane Ike, as it was making landfall in Galveston.

Our friend ai9d has to go soon so who wants to continue posting the NOAA3 obs? I will take the Air Force ones for a while.
