I think Gusty is referring to history-wise.

Gotcha. I know Gusty has island awareness...and huge compassion, it just was the word, and knowing they are being hit right now...yes, historically Paloma will be in the books.

Records

Paloma is one of seven major hurricanes recorded in the month of November—the others were The Jamaica Hurricane of 1912, The Great Cuba Hurricane in 1932, Hurricane Greta in 1956, Hurricane Kate in 1985, Hurricane Lenny in 1999 and Hurricane Michelle in 2001. Also, when it reached Category 3 intensity on November 7, the 2008 season was the first on record to have at least one major hurricane form in each of July, August, September, October and November, becoming the first hurricane season on record to have a major hurricane form in five different months of the hurricane season. Only June didn't have a major hurricane this year. It is also the only "P" storm to reach major hurricane status. On November 8, Paloma became the fifth hurricane to reach Category 4 strength in the month of November - a feat only repeated by the Cuba Hurricane, Greta, Lenny and Michelle.

The GFDL now keeps Paloma as a minimal TS in the Keys.

140 mph now.

AT 700 AM EST...1200Z...THE CENTER OF HURRICANE PALOMA WAS LOCATED
NEAR LATITUDE 19.7 NORTH...LONGITUDE 79.6 WEST OR JUST SOUTHEAST OF
CAYMAN BRAC. THIS POSITION IS ALSO ABOUT 110 MILES...175 KM...
EAST-NORTHEAST OF GRAND CAYMAN AND ABOUT 165 MILES...265 KM...
SOUTHWEST OF CAMAGUEY CUBA.

PALOMA IS MOVING TOWARD THE NORTHEAST NEAR 8 MPH...13 KM/HR...AND
THIS MOTION IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THROUGH SUNDAY. ON THE FORECAST
TRACK...THE CENTER OF PALOMA IS EXPECTED TO MOVE AWAY FROM LITTLE
CAYMAN AND CAYMAN BRAC THIS MORNING...AND BE APPROACHING THE COAST
OF CENTRAL CUBA LATE TONIGHT OR EARLY SUNDAY.

REPORTS FROM AN AIR FORCE RESERVE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT INDICATE
THAT MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS HAVE INCREASED TO NEAR 140 MPH...225
KM/HR...WITH HIGHER GUSTS. PALOMA IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS
CATEGORY FOUR HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON SCALE. SOME
ADDITIONAL STRENGTHENING IS POSSIBLE THIS MORNING...WITH WEAKENING
EXPECTED LATER TODAY THROUGH SUNDAY.

Max wind gust so far at this location is 111 mph, they just had a 100 mph gust. It's not 140 mph but winds gusting over 100 mph is very scary and destructive. WOW

Most of the Caymans are still recovering from Iván and now Paloma is going to delay the full recovery.

Winds out of the NNW at Cayman Broc, Paloma's eye is starting to move away.
