We of the World Meteorological Organization, in respect for the damage caused in Cuba by Hurricane Paloma, hereby state that the name shall be retired and replaced with Phyllis.
And you know something...I wouldn't doubt that that'd be the name they'd use.![]()
If you ask me, Pamela would be a nice name, but sounds too similar. Others? Polly, Pearl, Pam...whichever. Honestly, Pamela is largely my choice, but anything as long as it's not Phyllis.
It has to be a Spanish female name.
Examples, Paz, Paola, Paula, etc.

I apologize for it. I was making fun of the WMO's recent naming policy in regards to the earlier post. Hurricane damage isn't funny in my opinion nor should it ever be. Truth be told, I didn't know the scope of the damage on Cayman Brac. But just so you know, I'm not making fun of the Caymans, Cuba, the damage, or any of the lives affected, but poking at the naming.

I understand that. I understand that there is a lot of unawareness of what happens in the islands. But it is here on this site and it only takes a minute or so to read before one posts. I completely believe you weren't being uncaring by direct intention. It's just so hard sometimes, when those of us in the islands are in a Katrina situation, for the posts to go on like la la, next. If what happened in Cayman Brac happened in the states it would be world wide news. We know this, we accept it, it never happens. But I'll say this about that. I'll continue to be the loud annoying voice on S2K in the wilderness, once in a while saying...HEY!!!!! I know on the grand scale of things we're a very small (and many of these islands not American) part of the grand scheme of things, but if you don't care much at least try to fake it by extending some compassion for a week or so...I don't think that is too much to ask.

If this gets back into the Caribbean, there could be a problem.
A caribbean track is concerning...look where it turns after that....Florida....
probably at most a strong baroclinic low, but going into the caribbean first,
that could be a problem.

There won't be anything left to move back into the Caribbean. It's dead. Winds around the center are down to 5-10 kts, and the center is becoming diffuse. I think the last advisory will be issued in the next hour.

You can get the idea of how extensive the damage has been in Cayman Brac when you see the pics that are posted in the Paloma Aftermath thread at the top of forum.

Darn, I was looking forward to a possible "naked swirl watch".

In any case, the latest satillite loops show it moving nnw into
the atlantic, where conditions are not favorable for development.
It may enhance rain chances across south florida later this
week as remnant moisture, due to a surface ridge building in above
it and pushing it west.

Here's a 01Z surface plot of what's left of Paloma. Not much.

Paloma's death is now official, and this may mark the end of the 2008 season.

I'm not sure why the NHC feels it's necessary to mention systems that won't develop (according to their own words). There are other areas that won't develop that they can make "yellow", too.
In any case, 94L has been deactivated.
However, "may" was the operative word. Let's hope it's over.

I don't think that's true.
Neither of the two female names they've replaced since 1979 which had a definite Spanish origin were replaced by "Spanish" names. Elena was replaced with Erika, and Isabel was replaced with Ida.
And they don't always replace French origin names with "French" ones either; Michelle was replaced by Melissa and Jeanne was replaced by Julia.
They can't use Paula because it's already on the 2010 list. And Paola is originally Italian, not Spanish, though recently it's been used a good bit in Latin America.
If they do replace Paloma with a Spanish name, I'd vote for Perla myself.

I think Paloma means dove/pigeon in Spanish.

Yes. But it's also used to name females.
