I won't say "happy" - it's a solemn occasion, not a happy one. Please take time today to remember those who have given their all.
IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)

Re: Veterans Day
Same day, just different name.. REMEMBRANCE DAY here in Canada.
1918-2008 We should never forget the ones who served in the First and Second World Wars and also in Korea.
And all the other wars, where those that we love are still serving, including Iraq and in Afghanistan.

Re: Veterans Day
It's been nearly 40 years since I stepped off that plane and spent that first night in Vietnam. It was January, but the air was warm. Night sky continually restocked with flares. And the sound of distant artillary.
More than anything I remember the smell of that country. I can still smell it. Earthy. Human. Basic.
How much I still appreciate the commitment of our troops in distant places; right here at home. Defending our freedoms in so many ways.
It's a two handed handshake from this vet to the rest out there on this day.
Thank you. Thank you. A very real thank you.

Re: Veterans Day
It's been 38 years since I lifted my right hand and did the oath. It seems like I've been a veteran since birth.....(also a military brat).
Earlier this morning I heard of a young woman....it was on National Public Radio.....she is a 21 year old combat widow. She started a campaign of traveling and finding similar women.
I started crying and had to pull over on the side of the road just to calm down.
There was a time when I only really looked up to senior veterans.....WW2 and Korea. Times have changed.
We now have a new generation of veterans. Mostly urban combat vets. There has never been a more important time than now to support those with recent service.

Thank you az and dionne.
Az, your post made me cry for remembering those who have bravely fought for our freedom and for those who are fighting for our freedom now. God bless you all.
This day is a bittersweet day as is all days remembering those who fought for America. Today is another reminder of the husband of my niece who was injured on march 2, 2007 and died from his wounds on march 7, 2007. RIP Mark.
