Irish slaves in the New World?

Irish Slavery

I will say, the hosting web site, Race and History, has articles by Noam Chompsky and the convicted cop killer Mumia abu-Jamal, so I'm not automatically accepting this article as fact.

But I do generally accept the history that the English of the Cromwellian period weren't particularly nice to the Irish people. But that was a long time ago, there is again a free Irish state, the majority of the people in Ulster are loyal to the UK, and the English (along with Canada) is probably the most reliable ally of the United States.

English have never been particularly nice to the Irish until recently. So, I wouldn't put it pass them to have done something like this. There has been a lot of history supressed or forgotten. And you've mustn't be of Irish descent or remember the Irish wave of immigrants in 1840s from US history class, because you forgot the various potato famines in Ireland that have laid at the feet of the English. There is plenty of evidence that the various policy and prejudices of the English and the English government led to the most severe and deadly of the potato famines in the 1840's. And then there was the violent struggle against the English in the early 1900's that eventually led to the Irish free state, with a lot of the money coming from Irish-Americans.

Chomsky is a very controversial figure. He did groundbreaking work in linguistics but went off on a lot of tangents in his politics. His definition of slavery is so expansive that capitalism could be twisted into slavery of the poor. He is not known as an authoritative historian. I reccommend getting some more sources before reaching any conclusions.

My great great grandparents came over for Ireland and landed at Ellis Island. My Mom says they never had a nice thing to say about the English....MGC

I decided to look at that link. I didn't find the article about the Irish. In my post above, I just assumed that the article was by Chomsky or the other dude. It very well may not have been so I might have jumped the gun a bit.

But having seen that site, all I can say is that it hosts the kind of discussions that we don't want to have on S2k because they're too political, divisive, and controversial.

Sorry but we just don't want to go there. Ed I previously gave you a link to a site where you can debate this stuff to your heart's content. But it can't be done here. I'm locking the thread.
