Thanksgiving menu

With Thanksgiving a short 13 days away, anyone else got their meal planned out? I've cooked Thanksgiving dinner for the past 20 years, not that Michelle can't cook, she's a darn good cook, but I LOVE cooking the dinner.

This years menu is a little different than I've ever done:

Applewood smoked turkey
Applewood smoked pheasant
Tomato shrimp aspic

and then the usual trimmings etc.

13 days away? :eek:

Oh boy.

I'm moving into my new house (FINALLY!) :D but it's nothing but a sea of boxes and misplaced furniture and whatnot. I can't even begin to think about Thanksgiving yet. I was hoping to be in here in time to host it at my house, but it'll have to wait until next year. That's ok, though... I'm very thankful this Thanksgiving to be in my new house.

Yikes! I just moved last week and finally got everything put away and have the Christmas stuff out and the hubby put the tree up today! We don't even know what we're doing, he's saying we've left Philly and now it's time to start new traditions, we might even go to the Thanksgiving Day Parade in NYC!

*If* I am cooking (gonna get my free Turkey next week) it'll be Turkey breast, stuffing, candied yams and maybe my homemade cole slaw and a sugar free pumpkin pie. We're on special diets this year so no gravy :(
Might end up having the meal on the Sunday after as I have to work Friday night and he wants to go shopping Friday

One trimming I always make is Mama Stamberg's Cranberry Relish. Yum!

I'm not a big sweet potato fan, so I usually do homemade mashed potatoes instead.

Oh, and I know a lot of people hate them, but to me it isn't a proper Thanksgiving dinner without Brussels sprouts. Just don't overcook them - steam lightly and serve with butter. Yum! :D

YEAH...can you BELIEVE it's ONLY 12 DAYS now??? Holy smokes, where did the year GO?!?!?!

x-y-no.....BRUSSELS Sprouts??? OMG... and here I thought I was the ONLY one on the planet that LOVES 'em :ggreen: Absouletly, turkey day ain't turkey day UNLESS accompanied by brussels...got me hungry now :ggreen:

It will be the first T-Day in my house in TUS that I moved into last April. It will be Turkey, cornbread stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, salad, rolls, and Cranberry sauce. Since I don't drink alcohol, we will have Sparkling cider. We're not big on desserts and Stephen said to pass on the pie.

This year is going to be a very special Thanksgiving. We always gather at my mother in laws home.....which usually means traveling......not this year. We have moved her to within one block of us....tried to get her to move in with us....but she 's so darn independent and at 82 beginning to show her age. Our daughter will also be home as she has just completed grad school. But most of all we will be giving thanks for my wifes recovery from breast cancer! Her final chemo infusion is on 11-21-08. She is "NED" (no evidence of disease).

On the menu will be baked turkey, pecan smoked turkey, venison back strap in an onion gravy, several types of dressing, sweet potato pie (we grow our own sweet potatoes), string bean casserole, pineapple casserole (which has become our daughters signature dish) and of course the chocolate swirl cheese cake my wife Becky always makes. Of course there are some dishes I've forgotten and prolly some new ones.....

I've never been big on the holidays. This year feels very different. The last time I was this comfortable at Thanksgiving, I was sitting in a mess hall at Ft Ord having just returned home.....and that was a long time ago.

We will be having the usual this year. I am hosting again. :D After not being able to have everyone over last year (car accident) I am very thankful to be able to host again.

Turkey
Oyster dressing
mashed taters
gravy
green beans
sweet potato casserole - for my sister
squash casserole - if I find the time to make it
fresh baked bread
iced tea

I wish I wasn't the only one who likes brussel sprouts - maybe I'll just make some for me. :cheesy:

I wanted to try some new recipes this year - but was voted down.

We're going to Walt Disney World for Thanksgiving weekend. On Thanksgiving we're dining at the Garden Grill at The Land in EPCOT Center. The menu is family style, as follows:

Oatmeal cluster bread
Cornbread
Salad with raspberry walnut vinaigrette
Flank steak with mushroom au jus
Rotisserie chicken with cranberry orange relish
Fried catfish
Yukon gold mashed potatoes
Cornbread Stuffing
Warm bread pudding

I'm looking forward to it. :)

Well, everyone sounds pretty excited this year. My kids will be home and all the family will be together - my most favorite time... We'll have:
Italian wedding soup
Turkey with giblet gravy
Cornbread Stuffing
Also some Stuffing with apples, sausage and pecans
Candied sweet potatoes
Mashed potatoes
Cranberry/orange relish
Cole Slaw
Corn
Green Beans
Homemade noodles
Deviled Eggs
Hot Rolls
Pumpkin Pie with homemade whipped cream
Cherry and Cream Crustada with almonds
Peaches and Cream Crustada
Lots of Chardonnay and Merlot
And OODLES of LOVE

I'll be stopping at Dennis and Michelle's for some brussel sprouts!!

I'm FULL just readin' your menu Dink :ggreen: better get the fat pants outta storage (cuz I've lost 46 LBS. since this time last year, had to, wasn't going to a size 44" waist, no WAY Jose...I'm down to a 38" from a 42" in 11 months, I can ACTUALLY see my TOES now :ggreen:

BTW...I'm down to 234 lbs. ,there was NO WAY I was going to tip the scale at 280 lbs., uh, uh, no way!

NOW...what is a Crustada? Sumpthin' like a pie I take it?

Crustada
I make my regular pie dough and roll it into a circle. In the center I place apples, cherries, peaches, blueberries or any type of filling you like. Fold the edges of the circle toward the center, brush with egg wash, sprinkle with raw sugar and almonds and bake @375° till golden brown.

I mix a package of cream cheese with one egg and 1 cup of powdered sugar and spread it on the center of the crust and then top it with fruit to make the crustada's with cream.

You know me, I love to cook and I'm always experimenting with one thing or another.

These are easy to make and everyone loves them.

Help! I've been asked to bring 3 items (dessert, wine and side dish) to a family Thanksgiving Day dinner. One is a vegetable side dish (preferably green). I cannot, repeat, cannot bring the traditional green bean casserole dish. This is my SIL's house and she subscribes to Bon Appetit magazine! She scours recipes posted each month and is always trying a new recipe. Nothing that is traditional or tried and true.

I need a vegetable recipe for 20. That I can ideally prepare at home and then bring in a casserole dish. Or even better, my crock pot and then just plug in when I get there.

Does anyone have a really good vegetable casserole recipe that I can prepare half way at home, putting foil or plastic wrap on top and then pop in her oven for oh, 20-30 minutes?

And have it come out as if I had prepared the entire dish at home? That's what I'm worried about. That it will taste like it was canned, frozen or the green bean casserole that everyone has tried.

Thanks so much! I tried to take a salad or potato side but others quickly snapped up those side dishes. Dang it!

PS - I should add that I've made or brought an excellent broccoli casserole to family dinners before. But I've made that side dish at least 5 times by now. It's so easy to transport and bake in someone else's oven. But I'm sure by now they're weary of that side dish....LOL

That could work! Thanks.

I figure half the people at this dinner won't eat vegetables anyway......so I could make a spinach casserole and please half of them (adults!).

It's much easier than trying to continue cooking a dish on my SIL's stove. I just don't want to be in her way. Her kitchen is on the small size. This way I can hand her the casserole and suggest she reheat it or continue baking it for half of the cook time.

I can't imagine Thanksgiving without green bean casserole... love it! It's simple to make, as well.

Good luck. Let us know if you make the Spinach Casserole or something else, and how it turns out.

I guess Green Rice is out? It has broccoli in it and it's green. :ggreen:

I'm not a cooked spinach eater but i eat this. You don't taste the spinach...mainly the cheese and croutons!
