Tue Nov 18 2008
Raleigh, N.C. — Bitterly cold winds blew across the state Tuesday as a few places reported snow flurries.

Heavy snow showers were reported in downtown Durham, in Cary and in Raleigh Tuesday afternoon. An upper-level area of low pressure was "squeezing out some snow flurries" as it moved out of the area, WRAL meteorologist Nate Johnson said.

WRAL viewers reported seeing flakes in north Raleigh, in Oxford, in Tarboro and in Carrboro. Flurries were visible from the windows of the WRAL studio on Western Boulevard.

Roanoke Rapids residents reported a little snow Tuesday morning. Schools closed in three western counties after officials decided that light snowfall made roads too slick for buses.

"Snow showers are driven by the same thing that causes summer-time thunderstorms – a rapid decrease of temperature with height," WRAL Chief Meteorologist Greg Fishel said.

"We've got a huge cool down on our hands," she said. "It's very cold for this time of year."

With wind chill, Tuesday afternoon temperatures will feel like they are just at the freezing mark. Fishel said temperatures on Tuesday reached the mid-40s, which was "colder than normal" for even the middle of January.

As the system departs the area in the afternoon, the air will dry and temperatures will fall even further than they did on Monday.

The low will dip into the 20s before dawn Wednesday. Tomorrow shapes up to be less windy, clear and just as cold.

Thursday shapes up as the warmest day of the week, with a high in the mid-50s being forecast.

Early computer models show the cold returning and temperatures dropping back below the freezing mark by the weekend. If you are headed out to the Christmas parade in Raleigh on Saturday, Fishel said, bundle up.

I'll confirm the flurries. I got up and went outside to work on my truck around noon Tuesday. Something frozen struck me. I was shocked. I looked at the windshield of the truck, and noted that it was in fact snowing! It quickly stopped. I then drove into Ayden about an hour later, and while putting some gas in the truck, it started really snowing. I mean, enough that you had to turn on the windshield wipers. It lasted about 15 minutes or so. Later that afternoon, I drove to Chockowinity, NC to drop off a load of scrap metal and while there a few flakes hit my windshield.

So over a 4 hour period I was in a few flurries over about a range of 30 miles east to west and 10 miles north to south; all southern Pitt County and southern Beaufort County.

Here is a picture that was taken in Durham this morning (from WRAL.com):

Fri Nov 21 2008
Raleigh, N.C. — Cold air blasted back in and some "big, fat, fluffy flakes" fell early Friday.
The snow band entered Caswell County around midnight and then slowly moved east and south in the early hours of Friday. For a while, the last few tendrils of the band trailed over Wake County, then the band pushed east of Interstate 95.

Cold and wind became the top story after the snow moved out. Temperatures won't warm above the low 40s, and strong winds will blow, gusting up to 30 mph.
The wind will also drop humidity levels rapidly and could fuel wildfires. The National Weather Service advised residents in central North Carolina to avoid burning leaves.
Overnight, record lows will be possible, creating a bitter-cold outlook for the Raleigh Christmas parade. Saturday morning will start out in the low 20s and get to around 30 degrees by the start of the parade.

WRAL viewers reported that snow started falling steadily around 2:30 a.m. Friday and covered the ground in northern Person County, Roanoke Rapids and Mebane.
Snow showers were also seen in Cary, Raleigh, Durham, Rolesville, Tarboro and in Johnston and Granville counties. Radar showed snow falling as far south as Fayetteville, Southern Pines and Sampson County.
The heaviest snow in central portions of the state fell north and west of a line from Henderson to Durham to Asheboro.
In mountains, police responded to dozens of wrecks during the surprise snowfall.

Schools in Asheville and other mountain counties closed for the day. Students in Guilford and Forsyth counties got a two-hour delay.

Pretty rare for snow on the OB anytime. I have, however, been lucky enough to go driving on the beach (it's legal there) while it was covered by a couple of inches of snow! (Just imagine the pic to the left, except the beach is white, not tan.)

We also had a few flurries in Pitt County Friday around 6 am, and while driving back from Greenville to Ayden this afternoon a couple of big flakes hit my windshield, although I wouldn't even have called it a flurry. Since then the temp has dropped and the winds are howling.

P.S. WooHoo! I'm Cat 2.

It also (go figure, the year I aint there) snowed back home. We live east of New Bern, about 15 miles WNW of Morehead City. Got a text from a friend of mine saying it was snowing hard, thought she was pulling my leg, called my mom and found out it did indeed snow pretty hard...no accumulations tho
