I've made a pledge to myself that everytime i go to walmart this Christmas season (which is quite often) I am going to purchase an item for Toys for Tots. I bought 4 items today and i've decided that the least i will spend on an item is $10. My family and i have been blessed to be able to afford what we want and my kids never went without. I can't say the same for some kids. This year is a good bit tighter for us since i'm not working anymore but we'll manage just fine.
Anyone care to join me in taking this pledge? It can be a $5+ item or i even saw some hotwheels and babydolls for $1.

Good idea, CajunMama. I really like Toys for Tots, and donate to them every year around this time. My "everyday" charity, for those interested, is Paul Newman's Hole In the Wall Camps, specifically the Boggy Creek camp in Florida. The organization is a summer camp for chronically ill children who have special needs and can't do a regular summer camp. While in college I volunteered at Boggy Creek for a few weeks every summer.

Whenever there is a food-drive, I donate canned goods. There's a large food bank in Philadelphia called "Philabundance" that I donate money to. In Atlantic City we have Sister Jean Webster's Kitchen. Ms. Webster was a cook for one of the casinos and she answered a calling to feed everyone that comes to her kitchen a hot meal once a day. She doesn't turn anyone away, even some of the bus people that come down to the casinos. The casinos donate equipment, Harrah's employees donate time every Friday to help serve, clean, etc. I'm always sending money to her.
My biggest charities are animal related and I guess hunger related. I can't for the life of me see how we can let people in our own country go hungry. I'm also dedicating all of my United Way weekly contributions to the regional food bank. They have been really hurting this year and it's only getting worse with the economy.

I am working on organizing a few events for this year. I am working actually with an organization similar to Toys for Tots here in St. Pete with the same goal. I have donated to Toys for Tots however. Also, we are working to donate winter and kids clothes to the Salvation Army. I am in the planning stages to work with the Salvation Army to wrap presents in local malls in the days before Christmas similar to what I did in HS. I am hoping all of these events will work out, but we will see.
