Local High School to Perform Provocative Musical?

#1 Postby TexasStooge » Thu Dec 04, 2008 11:55 pm

A Rowlett High School drama group will be doing a high school production of a hit Broadway Musical "Rent". Although it's racy and provocative, the faculty members say they're doing a more edited version, making it more suitable for teens 13 & up. The studens' parents are protesting against the production amid concerns.

High school kids are old enough to deal with these issues. I went to a Catholic high school and we did a lot of pretty racy stuff in the drama club (I was on the lighting crew).

I went to an all boys Catholic high school. Never had a date in high school. I got to first base a couple of times when the school had dances and invited girls from Queen of the Rosary Academy and Notre Dame Academy, but never worked up the courage to actually call someone. And I didn't own a car then.

I will say, on an off topic, discussions about whether sex ed classes should teach abstinence or birth control- abstinence is 100% effective when used, and despite never having had a class about contraception, it seemed everyone in high school knew where babies came from, and knew what condoms were.

Oh come on! Let the kids do Rent. Its something that not many people get a chance to see, let alone act out. The kids are old enough that they can do it with a few edits (or without depending on the students).

I went to an all-boys Catholic high school too (St. Xavier in Cincinnati), but I had a never-ending stream of dates back then. Our school was considered fairly prestigious and all the girls wanted to date an X boy. I worked my way through a number of Catholic girls' schools in the last 2 years of high school.

Anecdotal evidence aside, all evidence suggests that in area where birth control is taught comprehensively in school, the teen pregnancy rates are much lower than in areas where abstinence-only education is practiced. The fact is, kids are going to mess around (not all kids, but many) no matter what you teach. You might as well arm them with the tools and information to adequately protect themselves.
