Looks like a classic case of the core of the low being so cold, it will "squeeze out" any ounce of available moisture that is left. I'm thinking now there probably will be light snow or flurries in the area after all, but nothing to really write home about.

Nothing but rain so far... heading out to run errands. Maybe it'll start snowing while I'm out! Image

A woman on a politics and guns blog I frequent, out in the country, nearest big town Brenham, reports snow has started, and is sticking to the grass...

Here in what we call the "dirty branch"(Spring Branch area of Houston near I-10 and Gessner) it has started to sleet at a steady pace with a flake or two mixed in for good measure.

.DISCUSSION...
PATCHY LIGHT OVER EASTERN ZONES DECREASING IN AREAL COVERAGE EARLY
THIS AFTERNOON. FAST APPROACHING UPPER LEVEL TROUGH/LOW STARTING
TO COOL MID LAYERS OVER WESTERN ZONES. PRECIPITATION AREA
ASSOCIATED WITH THIS SYSTEM JUST WEST OF COLORADO/WHARTON/JACKSON
COUNTIES. NAM/GFS BUFR AND RUC SOUNDINGS ARE IN CLOSER AGREEMENT
FOR THIS EVENING ESSENTIALLY INDICATING LIGHT SNOW MIXED WITH RAIN
SHOWERS WITH THE FORMER POSSIBLY BEING THE DOMINANT PRECIP TYPE.
WET BULB ZERO HEIGHT DIFFERS HOWEVER WITH MODELS (ALONG WITH WET
BULB VERTICAL PROFILE AT LOWER LEVELS). THICKNESS VALUES SUPPORT
FROZEN PRECIP FOR THE EVENING HOURS. MOISTURE WILL BE LACKING OVER
NORTHWEST ZONES BUT PROGRESSIVELY INCREASING LEVELS TO THE SE
ZONES (WHEN UPPER LOW MOVES THROUGH). TEMPERATURES THIS AFTERNOON
HAVING A HARD TIME CLIMBING UP WITH COLD AIR ADVECTION AND CONSIDERABLE
CLOUD COVER. MINS TONIGHT SHOULD BE IN THE MID AND UPPER 20S WEST
AND NORTHWEST ZONES...AND NEAR OR SLIGHTLY ABOVE FREEZING SE ZONES.
SURFACE/NEAR SURFACE GROUND TEMPERATURES STILL RELATIVELY WARM DUE
TO SUSTAINED WARM AIR TEMPERATURES THE LAST FEW DAYS. THIS WILL HELP
QUICKLY MELT ANY LIGHT FROZEN PRECIP THAT MAY REACH THE GROUND. WE
DO NOT EXPECT ANY FROZEN ACCUMULATIONS.
A WARM UP IS IN STORE
THIS COMING WEEKEND WITH THE RETURN OF ONSHORE FLOW. GFS INDICATE
INCREASING ISENTROPIC LIFT SUNDAY. ANOTHER COLD FRONT IS INDICATED
BY GFS AND ECMWF MOVE THROUGH OUR REGION LATE MONDAY/MONDAY NIGHT
WITH THE FRONT REACHING THE NORTHWEST GULF AND THEN STALLING. FLOW
ALOFT WILL BE SW TO WSW WITH MINOR IMPULSES MOVING. LOW POPS ARE
IN PLACE RIGHT NOW FOR EARLY NEXT WEEK BUT THIS WILL INCREASE WHEN
LATER MODELS INDICATE MORE CONSISTENCY. 37

Just got calls from my children. Daughter and husband are driving in heavy snow in the Champions area and son is working on a huge forklift out in the snow in the Intercontinental airport area. Now appears that we may have some light accumulations in the area before morning if this keeps up.

I have a mixture of drizzle, sleet, and snow grains slowly getting a little heavier and transitioning more to sleet mixed with snow grains. No real snow just yet but judging by the radar some may be around soon :-)

.AVIATION...
HAVE UPDATED TAFS TO REFLECT THE EARLIER ARRIVAL OF THE LIGHT SNOW.
MODEL SOUNDINGS INDICATE VERY GOOD POTENTIAL FOR SNOW AS THE UPPER
LOW TRAVERSES THE AREA. ACCUMULATIONS OF AN INCH MAYBE ON GRASS OR
PERHAPS WING TOPS BY 7 PM
.
ENHANCED POTENTIAL FOR SNOW SHOWING UP ON
RADAR NOW FROM CLL TO NEAR ARM ALONG THE BACK SIDE OF THE LOW. GIVEN
THE SPEED OF MOVEMENT WITH THE UPPER LOW THE THE PRECIP SHOULD BE
ENDING BY 03Z AREAWIDE. IAH/CXO/UTS AREAS MAY GET A BRIEF BURST
LIGHT TO MODERATE SNOW AND TEMPORARILY LOWERED VISBY AS THE LOW
PASSES THROUGH LBX/GLS AREA--PROBABLY AROUND 23-01Z. CIGS SHOULD
SLOWLY RISE BUT NOT CLEAR OUT TIL THE DRY AIR ARRIVES AFTER
06Z-EXCEPT CLL. WRAP AROUND CLOUDS WILL STILL BE IN PLAY TO THE
NORTHEAST OF IAH AFTER 10Z BUT BY 12Z SHOULD WELL EAST. NORTHWEST
WINDS 10 TO 15 KNOTS THURSDAY RELAXING DURING THE AFTERNOON.
